The Gasbag is one of the more iconic creatures in ARK Survival Evolved, introduced during the Extinction DLC. Although the game has evolved to ARK Survival Ascended, many things have remained the same, including the return of the iconic Gasbag with the DLC. This extremely fluffy albeit gigantic caterpillar is used for various laborious purposes and can prove to be a great travel companion if you need to fly in and out of situations.

This guide will point out all possible ways to tame the Gasbag and the best outcomes for taming this fluffy creature.

The Gasbag is rather easy to find in ARK Survival Evolved in Extinction, as it spawns in four out of the six regions, namely zones 0, 2, 4, and 5. These creatures were also found in Genesis: Part 1 but were a bit of an outlier — as this docile herbivore was only found in a single zone. Even then, they were highly concentrated in two small patches of land.

The Gasbags in Extinction are different in appearance, based on their zone of origin. These creatures are commonplace in the lower left quadrant of Extinction but also had an average rate of spawn throughout the rest of the map — barring the rocky areas.

ARK Survival Ascended Gasbag taming guide

Even though the Gasbag is a docile creature with very little damage output to pressure you — it has tricks up its sleeve — so you must come prepared as well. Firstly, you need to track one, which based on your zone can be quite easy. The equipment for this task is a Large Bear Trap, a couple of Dino Gates, and your trusty Tranquilizer Rifle.

After you have located your intended target, remove any other creature near it — as the Gasbag's skittish nature will cause it to fly away at the first sign of trouble. Once the coast is clear, the required steps to capture and tame a Gasbag are as follows:

  • Put down a Large Bear Trap near the Gasbag.
  • Punch the Gasbag to get its attention and draw it towards the trap.
  • Once it's caught in the trap, put down 3-5 Dino Gates along the length of the Gasbag to enclose it.
  • Now shoot away with your Tranq Rifle until it is knocked out.
  • Once it is knocked out, use berries, specifically Mejoberries, to tame it. If you're stocked with resources, use Superior Kibbles.

For a level 1 Gasbag, you will need three Tranq Darts to knock it out. As for taming purposes, you will need close to 100-150 berries, and seven Superior Kibbles. Note that, Superior Kibble will shave off a significant chunk of the taming time, cutting it down to 22 and a half minutes, compared to the 2 hours and 15 minutes of taming time when using berries.

What are the uses of a Gasbag in ARK Survival Ascended?

The Gasbag is primarily used as a Tank due to the creature's innate ability to reduce incoming damage by 80% while inflated. Furthermore, it is an exceptional flier in its inflated state — therefore — it is best used to transport supplies and personnel in the game. Although its combat capabilities are lackluster, the Gasbag can still occasionally blow enemies away — literally.

If you require a one-stop creature for your exploratory needs, the Gasbag is quite useful if you can use it to its strengths. As more and more creatures are introduced to ARK Survival Ascended, its usage will undoubtedly diminish but for now — the Gasbag is here to stay.
