Tame Roll Rat ARK Survival Ascended
The Roll Rat is common in ARK Survival Ascended, but how exactly do you tame it? We're here to help (Image via Studio Wildcard)

Roll Rats are incredibly common in ARK Survival Ascended, but the process of taming one isn’t always so clear. This isn’t a creature that you’re going to trick into a trap, or KO it first, before you try to slap a saddle on it. It’s a mostly passive animal, unless you try to steal its gems or actively fight it. That makes it incredibly simple to capture and add to your collection, unlike many other animals in the world.

You won’t have to knock it out or anything, like taming a Megaloceros. All you need is to find a Roll Rat to tame in ARK Survival Ascended, and bring the right amount of its favorite food with you. That will vary with level, but we’ll cover that below.

Thankfully, it’s not hard to find Roll Rats in ARK Survival Ascended in the current Aberration map. They are a relatively common find throughout most of the map. The Roll Rat is often found burrowing in the ground and pulling out gems. Whatever you do, you need to avoid trying to take their gems, if you’re trying to tame one.

Before you go and try to tame a Roll Rat in ARK Survival Ascended, you’ll want a few things: The Roll Rat Saddle, and it’s favorite food: Giant Bee Honey. Depending on what level the Roll Rat is, you’ll want to make sure you bring a minimum amount of food with you. Below is the currently known amounts of Giant Bee Honey you may need:

  • Level 1: 1x Giant Bee Honey
  • Level 30: 2x Giant Bee Honey
  • Level 60: 3x Giant Bee Honey
  • Level 90: 4x Giant Bee Honey
  • Level 120: 4x Giant Bee Honey
  • Level 150: 4x Giant Bee Honey

What you need to do is equip the Giant Bee Honey to your final inventory slot. Then, when the Roll Rat burrows and its tail is in the air in ARK Survival Evolved, aim at the hole he’s in and press 0 to throw the Giant Bee Honey. You may have to keep doing this over and over, depending on the level.

It’s also recommended that you kill any enemies nearby that might attack the Roll Rat in ARK Survival Evolved. If it takes any damage at all, it will ruin the taming process and you’ll have to start over. Also, make sure you wait until you’re sure its burrowing and not just digging up a little food.

It takes a little bit of work to craft a Roll Rat Saddle in ARK Survival Ascended, but it is an interesting one. Unlike many others, the Roll Rat Saddle has a durability rating to keep an eye on. When you have Crafting Level 58, and the following ingredients, you can go to the Smithy and make this:

  • 270 x Hide
  • 150 x Fiber
  • 425 x Metal Ingot or Scrap Metal Ingot
  • 85 Cementing Paste or Achatina Paste
  • 45 x Green Gem or Fragmented Green Gem

Since the Roll Rat’s saddle loses durability when it comes into contact with non-foliage clippable resources, it’s not a useful combatant. It does, however, have quite a few useful roles in your collection:

  • Transport: Roll Rats can carry several people, and moves very swiftly via rolling. It can break rocks and trees that are in its way, but that weakens the saddle.
  • Harvester: The Roll Rat is an incredible Wood harvester, and also can farm Mushrooms and Berries. It will farm Berries and Mushrooms by itself as well. It also has an 80% weight reduction for Wood and Fungal Wood.
  • Fertilizer: Giving Roll Rats Stimberries will allow it to help you produce large amounts of fertilizer.
  • Bulldozer: WHile you do lose durability on its saddle, you can use it to smash through rocks, large mushrooms, and trees to clear an area to build in. The faster they’re going, the more damage they do to objects in their path.
  • Travel: The Roll Rat is one of the fastest ground mounts you can get in the game - plus it’s a lot of fun to roll around at the speed of sound.
  • Raider: Roll Rats are amazing in PVP, since they can swiftly smash through stone structures and metal doors, nor can they be immobilized by Bola. They are also a great way to prevent being hit with tranquilizer darts.
