Using traps in Sea of Thieves is one of the most satisfying gameplay mechanics offered by this title. While hacking and shooting at undead skeletons and other pirates might be the core combat in this game, the strategic decision-making that goes into using these items is in a league of its own. The key to becoming a more intellectual pirate is knowing how to use your traps and disarm those set by other players.

This article will explain how to use traps in Sea of Thieves, including how to find and disarm them.

Since traps can be used as an item, they fall under Throwables. Thus, you can only carry a limited number of traps with you. Every player can carry up to five Throwables with them. Consequently, you can have only one trap if you carry four other Throwables like Firebombs and Blnderbombs.

Made of metal, these traps look like regular bear traps, where enemies can get their feet stuck. However, if you forget where you set them, they could also capture you. Moreover, since all traps look the same, you may be confused about which one is yours.

Once you get a trap in your inventory, you can equip it by accessing your item radial wheel.

When the trap is in your hand, you can throw it on any flat surface to arm it automatically. However, they cannot be placed over rocks and other irregular surfaces, even if you can move over them.

To bury these traps after arming them, use a shovel to dig up the ground and cover it with sand. Remember that you can only set two traps at a time. If you set a third one, the first trap will disappear.

You can also load these traps with items like Firebombs to deal more damage to players who get caught in them. To do so, crouch and approach an armed trap, followed by a button prompt that allows you to load traps.

Once you select this option, your inventory opens, allowing you to place an item on the trap. Select the item you wish to load and you are good to go. However, remember that you can only load one item on it. You can swap the loaded item anytime.

You can load the following items on your traps:

  • Firebombs
  • Blunderbombs
  • Fireworks
  • Flares
  • Bone Callers
  • Green Cursed Cannonballs

When players get trapped in them, they take 26 damage and briefly become limp, lowering their movement speed. They will also set off any loaded items like Firebombs, dealing more damage to them.

You can disarm any trap in Sea of Thieves as long as they are not buried. To do so, approach an armed trap while crouching after which you will get a button prompt to disarm it. Hold down the button to disarm it and place it in your inventory. You will also collect whatever is loaded on the trap.

However, if you are in the middle of a battle and don’t wish to go through the hassle of disarming the trap, you can set it off by shooting and slashing it with your sword.
