While the Diablo 4 XP glitch has since been patched, it allowed some incredibly funny moments in the community. While not necessarily the first person to find this glitch, Redditor Neamins showed a comical glip while in the Kor Dragan: Archives map. They went from Level 29 to 63 in just about one second, and at first, there was zero idea how it happened in the first place. Players were scrambling to try and duplicate it, this writer included.
This had to do with having a Unique as a Rogue known as The Umbracrux. While it’s not clear how it triggered the XP glitch in Diablo 4, it only applied on certain bosses, according to Blizzard’s statement on the matter. Nonetheless, it left the internet in shambles, making the first day of the expansion a memorable one.
A brief Diablo 4 XP glitch let players gain tons of levels at once
Redditor Neamins didn’t even know how this Diablo 4 XP glitch triggered at first, which led to the hilarity of the situation and sent people scrambling to clear Strongholds. We even tried it ourselves on the first day, hoping to replicate the XP glitch, but to no avail. When the player killed the boss of the area he was in (Kor Dragan: Archives), they went from Level 29 to 63 in one kill.
While Blizzard accidentally made leveling much faster in Season 5, it wasn’t because of this Diablo 4 XP glitch. Sadly, Blizzard disabled the effect that was making this trigger in-game—the unique feature of The Umbracrux. However, it likely wasn’t because of the XP, but of another potent feature of this weapon.
Rogues who wield The Umbracrux can create attackable Shade Totems that reflect damage onto their attacker. With that in mind, players could challenge bosses that would otherwise one-shot them, replicate the damage via the Shade Totem, and easily defeat bosses they normally wouldn’t. That would then, in turn somehow create a gigantic XP spike for that player.
This was a hilarious bug and one that admittedly made the Redditor quite nervous; they didn’t want Blizzard to ban him for a major exploit. The community assured the player that this was something, at the time, it was unlikely anyone could plan for. However, it did lead to some incredibly funny commentary from the Reddit Diablo 4 community.
While this was certainly a mystery at first, more and more Rogues came to the Reddit thread to speak of their experience gaining too many levels at once. One even showed how they went from roughly Level 57 to 82 in one fight.
Unfortunately, this was found out, and the ability was disabled until further notice. This was revealed by both Adam Fletcher (Global Community Director - Diablo) and an official post by Blizzard on the Diablo 4 forums. The Umbracrux can still be used, but its unique effect cannot be.
Some players think the only reason it was fixed is that it also made fighting certain bosses incredibly easy, but the only thing we know for certain is that it allowed players to gain tons of XP that was not intended. No matter the reason, it was an incredibly comical moment for D4 fans as Season 5 kicked off.
