Star Citizen from Cloud Imperium Games is one of the most unique titles in the gaming industry and has been in development for more than a decade, yet there is no official release date in sight so far. This space-based MMO promises massive, endless space exploration and engaging gameplay. Yet, the question still stands, should you play Star Citizen in 2024? And the answer is, No. Unfortunately, Star Citizen is not worth playing in its current state.
Fans have been patiently waiting for a full release, playing and experiencing the game as it slowly develops for all these years. Even popular online content creators such as Shroud reviewed Star Citizen and shared their thoughts on it.
Why Star Citizen is not worth it in 2024?
Star Citizen is a crowd-funded title and according to the official tracker, the game has raised over USD 700 million and a record-breaking USD 3 million in a single day. Such numbers put a lot of expectations upon a game, but unfortunately, Star Citizen is not prepared to stand up to any of them. As said by Shroud:
“They still have a long way to go”
In its long and rigorous twelve-year development cycle, which is still ongoing, Star Citizen has made significant progress. Considering it is the debut title by Cloud Imperium Games, the size and the magnitude of the title are truly impressive. However, we have seen a similar situation with No Man’s Sky, and we all know how it severely failed during its launch.
Recently, the game has been free for a limited time, to attract more potential investors and players. But those who have tried it aren’t very satisfied with the current state of the product. While the game is truly vast and has a lot of potential, it is currently a bugfest. Every aspect of the game is infested by a plethora of bugs and glitches.
A player named GoastRiter on Reddit posted that they have spent over 100 hours in the game and 80 of it was spent dealing with various bugs and issues. They also complained about the in-game AI, which according to them, seems dull, as enemies stand still instead of attacking, ships float around without doing anything, and the NPC feels very shallow.
The Redditor also shared that the game heavily re-uses the same models for various aspects, has a very poorly designed map, and an unengaging gameplay loop. The public opinion of Star Citizen is so antipathetic that there is a dedicated subreddit named r/starcitizen_refunds, where consumers share their complaints about the title.
In the end, Star Citizen may not be worth playing in its current state, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad investment. The game may have been in development for years, but it has made a lot of progress and is continuing to do so. There are currently two editions available, the Aurora MR Invictus Starter Pack priced at USD 40.50, and the Avenger Titan Invictus Starter Pack priced at USD 56.25.
You can buy any one of these packs and permanently own the game while supporting the development.
