Throne and Liberty, an upcoming MMO from NCSoft and Amazon Games has many fans wondering if it’s going to be free to play. Finding a good free-to-play MMO can be hard, with several of them having predatory monetization somewhere along the way. While we cannot speak to the spiritual successor to the 1998 classic Lineage, we do know that this game will be free-to-play for everyone, regardless of the platform they're on.
Whether you’re taking part in one of the beta tests or simply waiting until the full launch of Throne and Liberty, it is free to play for everyone on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms.
Throne and Liberty is 100% free to play
Throne and Liberty’s developers have already stated on their website that the MMO is free to play and is an MMO based on guild-focused combat. While the game itself won’t be available until a later date, an open beta will be available for a limited time—from July 18 to 23, 2024—for several regions.
These include North America, Europe, South America, and Asia Pacific. The gameplay for Throne and Liberty promises to make it an interesting free-to-play MMO. Players pick a pair of weapons to maximize their various strengths, and that’s what makes your character. Instead of having a traditional class, your weapons define what role you play in battle.
Like the original Guild Wars, this free-to-play MMO is focused on Guild vs. Guild battles, where players can transform into massive golem to siege castles. It does sound like it will be an exciting experience, as long as gameplay remains fair and balanced for all players.
The MMO had a testing phase back in April 2024 and will come back for an open beta in July 2024. During this testing phase, there will be dynamic events every three hours, as well as Daily Conquest Battles, where players can either battle for the Boonstone or Riftstone. Castle Siege will not be available during this testing phase, nor will Tax Delivery Events.
While the monetization may change over time between testing and full launch, Throne and Liberty, at least in terms of the actual gameplay, is free-to-play. Whether it becomes pay-to-win or pay-to-go-faster is a matter of time and opinions.
