War Thunder is the most comprehensive military vehicle combat MMO currently available. Focusing on historical realism and combined arms warfare, it provides an experience unlike any other game in this genre. With over 2000 historically accurate aircraft, tanks, helicopters, and ships, War Thunder features military vehicles ranging from pre-World War Two to the modern era. The game has been around for over 12 years, leading to the question: Is War Thunder still worth it in 2025?

The short answer is yes. This article will explain why War Thunder is still worth it in 2025.

Note: This article is subjective and reflects the opinions of the writer.

If you are a new player wanting to experience an MMO with combined arms warfare, War Thunder is your best option. The entire game is free to play, so you don't need to necessarily shell out money. You will still be able to access every tech tree vehicle in the title. Whether you are F2P or Premium, you can take part in all events as well.

That said, if you want a Premium Account or a Premium Vehicle but don't want to spend money on the game, there is an alternate option. Four major events happen in the game every year. Grinding these will help you get event vehicles.

You can then sell these vehicles on the Gaijin Marketplace for Gaijin Coins. The value of a GJN is equal to one USD. The Coins can then be used to buy Premium Time, currency, or vehicles from the Gaijin Store.

The Gaijin Store also hosts three sales every year, where you can buy premium vehicles at a 50% discount. There are further discounts on Premium Time and currency. I have used Gaijin Coins to buy Premium Time for over two years now.

Apart from all this, the game itself is very enjoyable. The learning curve of some vehicles might be a little steep, but once you are familiar with them, you can become very good.

You can use vehicles from any era. On one side, there are iconic yesteryear vehicles like the Tiger I and II, M4 Sherman, T-34, Spitfire, and Mustang. On the other, you will see top-of-the-line modern machines like the Leopard, Abrams, F-16, Su-27, Rafale, and so on.

The game has seen steady growth in the last few years. When I started playing, there were around 50k-70k players online at a given time. Now, this has grown to over 150k and sometimes even 200k players online at any time of the day.

The game has enough vehicles to make you stay for longer, with new vehicles added in every new update.

Is War Thunder worth revisiting in 2025? (For returning players)

If you are a returning player, wondering if War Thunder is any better now than it was when you left, the answer is yes. Most players left the game owing to the grind being unbearable. You can breathe easy now, as things have gotten easier in the last couple of years.

I have been playing the game since 2020 and have over 4000 hours of playtime. When I started, the grind got really hard after reaching Rank V. I simply did not get enough Silver Lions or Research Points to quickly grind through a single tech tree. Without a Premium Account, it took me almost an entire year to research all the vehicles in just the German ground tree.

However, since I still continuously grind the game, I can tell you from firsthand experience that the grind is a lot easier now. Don't get me wrong, it's still not easy but is a lot better than what it used to be.

Back then, even with a Premium Account, the grind was hard. Bad matches meant you continuously kept losing money. This is not the case now. Some time ago, War Thunder received a feature that ensures that Premium players will not lose any SIlver Lions even if they earned less than what was needed for repairs.

For example, earlier, if you earned 3000SL but needed 5000SL for repairs, you would lose 2000SL even if you were a Premium player. But now, if you are a Premium player and have to pay more than you have earned for repairs, you will not lose any SL. That said, your net earnings will become zero, so you neither earn nor lose any Silver Lions.

This is a great time for getting into War Thunder, in my opinion. The title has seen various game-changing features throughout 2024, and there is a lot more in the works.
