Bungie will be giving away name change tokens to all Destiny 2 players possibly in the upcoming reset. A major part of the community just had their in-game name changed after the August 13 weekly reset. This includes renowned content creators, where their names were changed to the default Destiny 2 "Guardian" username.

The company addressed this issue recently, acknowledging the error from its side. It claimed the names were changed via a name moderation tool. Players can expect more official announcements from the developers soon. However, they did confirm that all players will be getting a free name change token, which is rare.

Bungie is giving away free name change tokens to all Destiny 2 players

Tokens for name change are rare in Destiny 2. They are usually given away in an annual cycle, especially when Bungie releases a new expansion. Hence, Bungie names that are visible for players inside the game usually stay the same throughout an entire year.

With the recent error from the developer's side, it appears every player will get a free token only two months after the expansion launch.

The company had this to say regarding the situation:

"We are tracking an issue where a high number of account names have been changed by our Bungie name moderation tool."

Confirming the name change tokens, Bungie stated the following:

"We are actively investigating and expect to have more information tomorrow, including details on an additional name change token for all players."

While some players didn't get their names changed from within, it seems they will still be able to use the additional one being offered by the developers.

Here's how to change your in-game name in Destiny 2:

  • After connecting to Bungie's official website, log in using the credentials of your preferred console.
  • The account option can be found on the top right of the website.
  • After clicking on "Setting" under the Account tab, there will be multiple tabs on the left side of the screen.
  • To change your name, look for a gap beside "Bungie Name" under the "Identity Settings" tab.
  • If a name change token is not available in the account, a red text will pop up right below the gap that says "You do not have any name changes available."

This article will be updated once Bungie announces the official release date for the name change token.
