Despite New World being an action MMO at its core, the developers introduced the option for aim-locking in the ongoing open beta for the game's 'Aeternum' update. However, this didn't sit well with fans, as they believed it could be detrimental to PVP. Twitch streamer TrickTrick further strengthened that argument through a recent clip, which shows how this new mechanic changes the game's PvP aspect.

Aim-locking is common for traditional Tab Target MMOs but Action MMOs require players to aim manually in order to damage an enemy. As a result, Action MMOs require a bit more skill and coordination, both of which are affected by the aim-locking feature.

This article will delve into this new feature and also explore how TrickTrick exposed its negative side for all to see.

How is aim-locking in New World detrimental to PVP?

A clip uploaded by streamer TrickTrick shows him winning a PvP duel in New World without even looking at his screen. The streamer just used the aim-locking mechanic and mashed his attack keys, enabling him to automatically target his opponent. Moreover, this mechanic also affects dodge and melee rolls as the aim-lock automatically compensates for it.

Unfortunately, this makes New World resemble a Tab Target MMO, despite being an Action MMO in essence. As mentioned earlier, this also narrows the skill gap between players since manual aiming is being taken out of the picture. Still, it is uncertain if this mechanic will be added to the game since it is still being tested in the New World Aeternum open beta.

As you might have already understood, having an aim-lock feature makes PvP very easy since you just need to mash buttons to damage your opponent. As a result, the PvP combat resembles a Tab Target system like Star War The Old Republic where you just have to lock on to enemies and attack them with melee or ranged attacks.

The combat in an action MMO is supposed to be balanced around real-time hits and hitbox registration. However, as we can see from TrickTrick's clip, the aim-locking mechanic takes out the competitiveness and skill required to fight your opponent as you can just tap your attack keys and hope for the best.

New World: Aeternum drops on October 15th and brings with it a host of new content and features. The Aeternum update's main highlight is a large-scale PvP zone, but the aim-lock mechanic would seriously affect the combat in the title. Well, only time can tell if the developers will choose to take this route.
