The First Descendant has been a subject of controversy since launch, but things seem to be heating up, as it is now accused of copying Destiny 2's icons while only slightly altering them. First reported by Forbes, the author pointed out how many icons posed more than just a similar design aesthetic in passing. Furthermore, comparisons between a sniper in The First Descendant and a Destiny 2 weapon were also made.
If the allegations are true, it could tank The First Descendant's reputation further as the game currently has a mixed reception on Steam. Here are the full details.
The First Descendant is accused of plagiarizing Destiny 2 icons
As observed in the above collage, many iconic are eerily similar to their Destiny 2 counterparts. It does seem too similar to be a coincidence, as some elements seem to be either removed or tacked on. To play the devil's advocate, however, there is a possibility that both games' developers used a similar source for the icons for their UI elements.
In this case, Nexon's case does seem less egregious, but thus far, neither the studio nor Bungie have commented on the matter. The allegations do not stop there though. Comparisons were also made between a weapon called "Differand Dream" in The First Descendant and a couple of Destiny 2 weapons, such as the IKELOS sniper and the Sleeper Simulant rifle.
Both of these features are embossed triangular designs whose resemblance is very similar.
That said, fans will likely grow more suspicious since Bungie's 2017 title is also a sci-fi looter-shooter video game. This is not helped by the fact that publisher Nexon has been lambasted by the fanbase for predatory monetization and artificial progression gating as well as general gameplay gripes about the core loop being stale, uninspired, and boring.
Despite that, however, the latest MMO looter-shooter continues to garner a decent-sized player base which is also surprisingly larger than Destiny 2, despite the launch of the latest "The Final Shape" DLC expansion. It remains to be seen how things move from here onwards, so stay tuned for further updates.
