World of Warcraft: Dragonflight's Season 3 isn't starting anytime soon, but we know Shadowflame Crests will remain in the game. At least, that’s what is currently planned. This was confirmed in a thread for feedback about the current upgrade system, and Chimes and one developer discussed what they’d like to do in the next season. They then implicitly confirmed that this is the plan for the next season of in-game content.
This doesn’t mean the Shadowflame Crest upgrade system will remain exactly the same in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight. There are some players who have grievances with it, but according to the developers, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight developer confirms Season 3 will have Shadowflame Crests
One member of the WoW Community Council was talking about the current Shadowflame Crest system and offered some pros and cons in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight. It’s pretty friendly to regular players, making it easy to get decently powerful gear throughout their gameplay.
While discussing the merits and issues with the system, Omnithic pointed out that there were parts that certainly feel counter-intuitive, and there’s also the issue of Bag Bloat. Players’ bags are being filled with a variety of currencies, and it’s taking up a lot of space.
At this point, Chimes, a WoW developer replied to assuage at least some concerns. They stated that the current structure contributes to inventory management systems, but there is talk about moving these to the Currency tab of the game.
Chimes had this to say on the WoW forums:
“The existing crest and fragment arrangement certainly contributes to inventory management concerns. While I can’t promise anything at this early stage, moving crests to the Currency tab is under serious consideration and I think it’s more likely to happen than not for next season. Additionally, having players capped on a given tier of crest getting the next tier down as fallback rewards is under discussion.”
The developer also pointed out that there is talk of aiding players that are capped on a certain Shadowflame Crest level by giving them the crest tier beneath that. None of this is 100% confirmed to be happening, but the next line in the post is the interesting one.
“And yes, I did implicitly reveal that our current tentative plans are that this system will be iterated on for Season 3.”
While it’s likely to change in some ways, the Shadowflame Crest system is here to stay, at least through Season 3 of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight. Players have been frequently giving their opinions on it on the forums.
The hope is that the developers will hear them out and make it an easier, more enjoyable system to use in future game updates.
