Once Human farming guide: Everything you need to know

Farming in Once Human
Farming is a complex system in Once Human (Image via Starry Studio)

Farming in Once Human is the best way to acquire ingredients and craft consumable items to buff your character in the endgame. This system can be unlocked in the early game, but you won't have access to all the necessary features required to have an automated farm until after defeating the third major boss. Additionally, having an efficient farm is quite complicated, as it requires you to set up multiple systems to achieve optimal results.

This guide covers everything you need to know about farming in Once Human, including how to set up an efficient farm.

To set up a farm in Once Human, you must first unlock the Planting node in the Logistics tech tree of the Memetics system. This will allow you to place Loamy Soil in your base and plant seeds acquired from gathering various flora around the map. However, your crops will require specific irrigation and lighting to grow successfully.

While you can do this manually by selecting a water source and planting the crops under sunlight, it's inefficient and time-consuming.

Here are all the systems that can help you set up an efficient farm in Once Human:

Planting

  • Compost Bins: After planting a crop, you will need fertilizers to help them thrive. The Compost Bin will allow you to turn spoiled food into fertilizer. This can be unlocked in the third tier of the Logistics tech tree.
  • Planter Boxes: This allows you to set up Planter Boxes in your base, which look aesthetically much better than just having Loamy Soil on your wooden floor. This can be unlocked in the third tier of the Logistics tech tree.
  • Fertilizers I, II, and III: These nodes will unlock various recipes for better fertilizers that will provide bonuses to your crops, such as increased growth speed and yield. You can unlock them in the third, fourth, and fifth tiers of the Logistics tech tree.

Irrigation

  • Rainwater Collection System and Water Storage: To set up an efficient irrigation system, you will require a constant water source. This can be achieved through the Rainwater Collection System and storing it in a Water Tank. These can be unlocked in the second tier of the Logistics tech tree.
  • Water Filter: This component filters the collected rainwater into Pure Water and can be unlocked in the second tier of the Logistics tech tree.
  • Water Pumps: In Once Human, maintaining water flow is crucial, and elevation plays a key role. For example, water will only flow from the Rainwater Collection System to a Water Tank if the tank is at a lower elevation. Using a Water Pump eliminates the need to place the various irrigation components at different elevations to maintain water flow. This can be unlocked in the third tier of the Logistics tech tree.
  • Automated Irrigation: This allows you to set up a Sprinkler system, which takes Pure Water from the Water Tank and automatically sprays it over your crops. You can even set the output intensity of the water flow by changing gears depending on the level of water a plant requires. This can be unlocked in the fourth tier of the Logistics tech tree.

Lighting

  • Grow Lights: While you can plant your crops under the sunlight, it is not efficient because they won't receive any light during the nighttime. Grow Lights can provide an artificial light source throughout the night, and similar to the Sprinkler system, you can set their intensity to match the level of lighting a plant requires. This can be unlocked in the fourth tier of the Logistics tech tree.

Electricity

  • Generator and Electrical Kit: To automate irrigation and lighting, you will need power. You can get it with the help of a Solar Generator and a High Voltage Battery. This can be unlocked in the third tier of the Logistics tech tree.

Deviant

  • Buzzy Bee: For certain recipes, you will need mutated versions of crops as ingredients. To acquire them, you can set up an Isolated Securement Unit with a Deviant like the Buzze Bee, increasing the mutation chance of the planted crops.

To unlock all these Logictic nodes in the Memetics tech tree, you must spend Ciphers, also known as Meme Points. These are acquired as you level up in Once Human.
