After exploring the world of Once Human for a bit, you may find yourself wanting to relax with some fishing. There are plenty of combat related things to do in this free-to-play MMO, but there are just as many non-combat activities. Unlike many titles in the genre, you won't unlock fishing through a questline or achievement in Starry Studio's latest game, but that doesn't mean it's difficult to start.

To begin your Once Human fishing journey, you'll have to follow a few key steps that may not be intuitive for players new to sandbox games. We're going to guide you through the process step by step, so you can start fishing quickly.

Note that parts of this article are based on our experience with the closed beta tests. We will update the article to reflect changes to fishing in the Global release version of Once Human if applicable.

How to craft your fishing rod in Once Human

Since Once Human is a sandbox survival-craft MMO, questing and achievements are far less common than in more traditional subgenres. This means freedom to do what you want, when you want. However, you'll have to do a lot of things without NPC guidance.

The first thing you're required to do to unlock the fishing minigame in Once Human is go to your Supplies Workbench and select the fishing rod craft. Once you have selected this item to craft, you will be required to forfeit 20 logs and 10 copper ingots. Thankfully, these are two very basic resources, so you won't need to worry about having them available.

The Supplies Workbench will then begin the crafting process. When it is complete, you will be able to obtain and equip your fishing rod.

Making fishing bait

Unlike in many other games, you cannot buy bait for Once Human's fishing system. To obtain bait to use with your fishing rod, you must craft it using the Supplies Workbench. There is more than one type of bait that you can craft and use, some costing more resources than others to create.

The simplest bait you will have the option to craft is Bait, which needs three pieces of rubber to be used as its crafting components. Other types of bait, such as Dough Fish Bait, will require different components and a corresponding blueprint.

Catching your first fish

To begin catching your first fish in Once Human you'll need to take your fishing rod and bait to an open body of water. Once you've arrived at your desired location, you can use the 'r' key to attach bait to your rod.

With your fishing rod equipped and attached with bait, you are now ready to begin the Once Human fishing minigame.

Using the mouse left-click button, you can cast your rod and begin waiting for a fish to take your line. When a fish does bite, move your rod the opposite direction the creature is pulling in order to reel it in. If you pull in the wrong direction, you will risk the fish escaping the line and taking your bait.

Since Once Human is a sandbox survival MMO, there's a chance that enemies may attack you while you're engaging in the fishing activity. Its recomended that you find a safe area before casting your line or that you bring a friend along to watch your back.
