While creating a second character is common in many MMOs, using an alt account is against the rules in Once Human. This restriction is because players normally can't have two characters on the same server, and an alt account bypasses this limitation. Multiple characters on the same server can lead to numerous game-breaking exploits, negatively impacting the overall experience for players.
The influx of alt accounts in Once Human is compromising its fairness, but an even bigger concern for players is the server cap. With alts taking up limited character slots, newcomers can't join their friends due to full servers. If this problem isn't resolved, it could significantly contribute to a decline in the game's player base.
Players struggle to play with friends due to alts in Once Human
Creating an alt account in Once Human is as easy as using the Loading Bay launcher for one account and the Steam launcher for another on the same PC. With these two separate launchers and the game being free to play, anyone can create a second character on the same server as their main one, and there are other methods to even make more alts than just one.
With an alt in Once Human, players can funnel resources to their main character, effectively doubling their base size and facilities. This allows them to collect twice the amount of resources, skewing the trading economy in their favor and giving them a significant advantage.
Additionally, some players use their alts to monopolize prime base locations, controlling rare resources or even selling those plots at exorbitant prices. This effectively turns this sci-fi horror survival game into a parallel of a real-life housing crisis.

While this situation is problematic — and has become a meta tactic on PvP servers — the impact of having an alt in Once Human goes beyond this, further damaging the overall experience.
Servers in Once Human have a cap, meaning that once a certain number of players join, the server gets locked, and no new players can enter. This caused significant controversy in the first season, as many players couldn't join their friends due to the servers having no slots available.
To address this, Starry Studio introduced an invite system in Season 2, allowing players to invite up to five friends even when the server is locked. However, this system also has a cap, and once that is reached, even invited players can't join their friends.
This has been a recurring issue, and with the influx of alt accounts, servers are now often filled with the same players running multiple characters instead of newcomers.
Most players play MMOs to have fun with friends and family, but the alt crisis has undermined this core aspect. As a result, many players are quitting daily. If this issue isn't resolved soon, the game will continue to lose players and may end up among the many failed live-service titles in the past few years.
