One month into The First Descendant, players still can't change their names

The First Descendant's latest patch added a new boss and playable character, but one basic feature still remains unaddressed: you can't change your name. There's a fancy 'title' system in the game that lets you mix and match affixes to decorate your name. Only, the actual name was arbitrarily assigned in the first place—and you can't modify it at all at the time of writing.

Trying to modify your name in The First Descendant only changes it to a factory default, which is simply 'Descendant' followed by player ID. When you copy your in-game name to share with other players over extraneous social media, it comes out as "Nameless#playerID."

The First Descendant is shipping out another new hotfix today, but it won't address the name game

Player names have always been a murky domain in The First Descendant. Firstly, the game never asks you to set a name. Like your real name was assigned at birth, the game arbitrarily picks one for you based on the name of your login platform.

For players on PC, it's their Steam name when they started playing. For those on PlayStation, it's their PSN name, and so on. To this day, this is not something Nexon gives you any prior notification on.

The First Descendant is a live-service game, and its base of operations is a MMO-like hub, to boot. Player names can be as big a part of self-expression here as the cosmetics they doll up in.

For a game that sells cosmetics with extortionate Premium currency prices, this is quite a contradiction. All you've got going is the title system in The First Descendant that I mentioned earlier.

It's especially strange considering custom player names is a feature we take for granted in most live-service games. Most MMOs and MMO-lites ask you to set up your name while creating an account, and in some of them, you can change it later on with premium currency or a tech ticket.

For the time being, Nexon has remained mum about the name problem. We can only assume that such a fundamental feature will eventually make its way to the game. However, with the silence from the developers, there is no ETA—only wishful thinking.
