To get to the final stretch of Act 1 in Path of Exile 2, you'll have the unlock the Memorial Gate in the Cemetery of The Eternals. You are led to this area through the Grim Tangle, and the hook is The Mysterious Shade quest. That said, the Memorial Gate is connected to multiple quests and bosses, including the entirety of Sorrow Among Stones.

In this guide, we'll go over what awaits you in this pivotal point of the main campaign, and how to get past it.

How to unlock the Memorial Gate in Path of Exile 2: Sorrow Among Stones quest guide

To open the Memorial Gate in Path of Exile 2, you'll have to get the two key fragments, both guided by two bosses in adjacent sub-areas. The entrance from Grim Tangle leads you right to the Memorial Gate, and thankfully, the local waypoint is right next to it.

To start, talk to the nearby NPC, Lachlann the Lost - who sets you up with the Sorrow Among Stones quest. As mentioned earlier, this is a part of the critical path for the campaign in Path of Exile 2. Sorrow Among Stones is just an overlapping snippet of self-contained narrative that you get on top.

Simply put, you have to now travel to the two burial crypts found in the Cemetery of the Eternals: Mausoleum of the Praetor, and Tomb of the Consort. From the waypoint, you should start traveling in any diagonal direction opposite the Memorial Gate. Due to the randomized nature of area instances in Path of Exile 2, it's not possible to pinpoint exactly where the crypts are located. However, they always spawn in two different quadrants of the Cemetery map.

There's no right order to complete these two sub-areas. Moreover, they contain the same set of enemies and have roughly the same layout. So, it's recommended you enter and complete whichever one you find first. Both of these areas contain additional riches, so you should comb the map when you do get to them.

Mausoleum has roughly the same tileset as Tomb of the Consort, and you sometimes get a particularly tricky enemy type called Eternal Knights. These use a shield and spear and thus receive little damage from the front.

Mausoleum of the Praetor has a secret chamber housing a vault of Gold. It's not a very large amount, but there are two Gold-rarity chests that have a good chance of dropping a Rare item.

Nevertheless, if you're in a rush to progress the campaign, you can head straight into the local boss if you find the arena first. For details regarding his moveset, check out our Draven the Eternal Praetor boss guide. This boss, as you would expect, drops one-half of the Memorial Key Piece.

Tomb of The Consort

In one of the narrow corridors that stretch towards the edge of the map, you can find a secret magical chest in Tomb of the Consort.

This chest is guarded by Rageknock, a rare enemy (two modifiers). Rageknock, much like Eternal Knights, uses a shield and mitigates damage from the front, so you'll have an easier time dealing with him with the help of minions or a co-op buddy. He drops a Lvl 1 Uncut Support Gem upon death. Meanwhile, the chest itself does not have much use - we only got a handful of Gold in our playthrough.

Tomb of the Consort also houses Asinia, the Praetor's Consort. Consult our guide to Asinia in Path of Exile 2 to learn her moveset and fighting strategies. She drops Asinia's Memorial Key piece alongside some more assortment of Magic and Rare loot and opens a portal back to the Cemetery.

Once you have both Memorial Key Pieces, portal to town and head back to the Cemetery waypoint. Opening the gate causes Lachlann to rush into the Memorial of the Eternal, and you are asked to follow him. Lachlann, in a shocking twist (that we may have spoiled right now), turns into the Lachlann of Endless Lament boss. Once you beat him, he drops the ring that can cure The Hooded One back in town, who now lets you respec passives and identifies items for free.
