The "Rage" mechanic in Path of Exile 2 combat is integral to a character's build, determining how much damage is being dealt. While flat additional damage or multiplicative damage is a permanent solution to a DPS problem, Rage provides a temporary but significant fix. It can be generated via a few passive nodes and unique items, especially for melee builds.
This article lists the basics of the Rage mechanic and how it works with a character's build.
What is Rage in Path of Exile 2?
Rage is a buff you can gain upon meeting certain conditions. However, you can also place these conditions yourself if you have specific passive nodes and items equipped on your character.
The Rage buff can be accumulated typically via melee hits and is limited to 30 stacks. Each stack of Rage buff provides a 1% increase in attack damage, leading up to 30% at maximum stacks.
You can view the number of Rage stacks you currently have on the top-left, beside other buffs you may have. However, note that Rage is not a Spirit buff, and can only be triggered via attacks. As mentioned, this mechanic is temporary, meaning you will start losing the stacks if you do not take damage or perform a melee attack on enemies for two seconds.
There are several ways to utilize Rage in Path of Exile 2, such as increasing its maximum stacks, gaining a percentage of armor per stack, gaining maximum stacks at once, or slowing the timer for Rage loss.
Important passive nodes for Rage in Path of Exile 2
If you do not have a source for Rage, you won't have the buff, as it is not an in-built mechanic on any character. Here is a list of a few important passive nodes built around the Rage mechanic, should you wish to use them in builds:
- Prolonged Fury: Inherent loss of Rage is 25% slower
- Vengeful Fury: Gain 5 Rage when hit by an enemy. Every Rage also grants 1% of armor
- Sudden Infuriation: 3% of gaining maximum Rage upon gaining the buff on a hit
- Enraged Reaver: +10 to maximum Rage while wielding an Axe
- Ignore Pain: Gain 3 Rage when hit by an enemy. Every Rage also grants a 2% increased Threshold
- Battle Trance: +8 to Maximum Rage
- Unforgiving: +4 to Maximum Rage. Inherent Rage loss starts 1 second later
Uniques such as Bristleboar grants an additional 3 Rage when hit by an enemy, on top of the passive nodes mentioned above. Other unique armor pieces such as Wings of Caelyn, Hateforge, and Horns of Bynden work around the Rage mechanics.
The support gem called Rage can be paired with any melee skill to gain a Rage stack on hit.
