At the time of writing, there's a high volume of buyout options for a specific normal (white-rarity) Amulet in Path of Exile 2. Stellar Amulets — one of the 10 base Amulet types in the game — are far more valuable than the others, and this is not determined by a volatile factor that will go away a patch later.
A cursory search on the official Path of Exile 2 trade site will reveal that the vast majority of Stellar Amulet trades are listed for 10-15 Exalted Orbs (the initial round of 1 Ex offers are mostly non-responsive sellers), and they're often translating to successful sales. But why is that?
Why Path of Exile 2 has an ongoing Stellar Amulet lottery
The explanation of this Stellar Amulet sale volume phenomenon will be obvious to enterprising Path of Exile 2 players: the Astramantis. For players not completely familiar with this get-rich-or-go-broke scheme, here's the rundown.
Most of Path of Exile 2's Uniques are descendants of a base item type. This will be visible on the item card below the Unique's title. While the same is true for items of all rarities, one currency item makes this information more important for Uniques. With Orbs of Chance, a base white-rarity item can be potentially transformed into a Unique that has it as its base item type.
Astramantis, one of the most exorbitantly expensive items in the game right now, has Stellar Amulet as its base item type. In other words, get an Orb of Chance and rub it on your white-rarity Stellar Amulet If fortune favors, you just got an item that will sell for 100 Divine Orbs or more.
Is it worth buying Stellar Amulets for this purpose?
The catch, of course, is that the odds are not in your favor. As per rough estimations on PoE Ladder, there's only a 0.05% chance of this happening. Roughly one in every 2000 Stellar Amulets should turn into an Astramantis with Orbs of Chance. The others are either outright destroyed or turned into the Fixation of Yix unique once every 50+ attempts. Mathematically, these odds are just not worth it.
Considering that Orbs of Chance themselves have a 7+ Exalted Orb cost with the current currency exchange rate in Path of Exile 2, each attempt will cost you about 23 Exalted Orbs. In other words, over an indefinite volume of attempts, the weighted average cost of a successful roll (2000 attempts, or about 46000 Ex) far exceeds the possible salvages (about 11500 Ex, according to the current Divine Orb exchange rate).
Naturally, these calculations are done on a hypothetical spectrum—most players will not have the time or seed money to stack multiple thousands of Orb of Chance and apply it once at a time.
The lucky gamblers can and do, of course, win big with an absurdly small number of attempts in the Stellar Amulet lottery in Path of Exile 2. However, for the average player, this is an almost guaranteed way to bankrupt yourself quickly.
