Path of Exile 2 has become the top seller on Steam, thanks to the popularity of its Early Access Supporter Packs and some well-placed regional pricing. While it is good news for Grinding Gear Games, December 6 might prove otherwise, should the studio fail to address the looming stress test on their servers.
Server issues have long been the bane of game studios, be it a new title launch, a new expansion launch, or a regular seasonal update of a live service title. Server stability has become something of a larger issue as games have gone up in scope. MMOs are particularly notorious for experiencing stability issues at random, crippling the experience for many players for extended periods.
Path of Exile 2 faces a major server stability hurdle ahead.
As Path of Exile 2 nears its eventual Early Access launch on December 6, the question regarding the servers has become ever-prevalent in the minds of players. The upcoming Early Access has experienced a surge in player excitement and subsequently high volumes of Early Access purchases, thanks in no small parts to the recent GGG Live event.
The event showcased new details about all of the classes, Ascension Trials, the foundations of the endgame, and much more. Path of Exile 2 was a hot topic even before the event, owing to the promised scope of the game. GGG Live almost turbocharged that conversation and put the title at the forefront of ARPG-related conversations, where even industry giants like Blizzard got involved.
Since then, Path of Exile 2 has quickly risen to the top of the Steam charts in every region. Players even reported that the game was in second and third position for Top Sellers on Steam, for their particular region. In a recent Reddit post by Eckala, it was reported that Path of Exile 2 was the bestseller in France, beating even heavyweights like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Throne and Liberty, and Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl.
From a global perspective, Path of Exile 2 stands in the fifth position on the Top Sellers chart. This wild success of an Early Access title has put many players on alert regarding the eventual server stability, come December 6. Many have already started sharing their concerns disguised as memes on the subreddit, and seemingly, the studio isn't far behind in addressing the concern.
In a recent interview with YouTubers Darth Microtransactions and GhazzyTV, Game Director Jonathan Rogers explained that GGG is monitoring the upcoming stress test on their servers. According to the interview, the studio is reportedly scaling up its tech and is hopeful for a smooth launch.
