When it comes to rare WoW mounts, there are more than I can conveniently count. With over 900 mounts in the game in 2024 and more coming every patch, they range from incredibly common to overwhelmingly rare. However, so many mounts exist in the “less than 1%” of the population range. I also had to narrow it down to some of the most interesting rare mounts that few players have access to.
Some of these are impossible to get now, so if you weren’t there in the earliest of days in WoW, you likely won’t have many of these. The data used was procured from the website Data of Azeroth, which showed me at least one of my mounts was incredibly rare but not rare enough for this list: the Amani War Bear.

What are the rarest mounts in WoW?
These are easily some of the rarest WoW mounts in the whole game, but there are quite a few honorable mentions. When looking at TCG mounts, I was torn between the Magic Rooster and Swift Spectral Tiger, for example. Both are incredibly rare, but it appears that the Rooster is just slightly rarer.
I picked from among the rarest and coolest mounts you can find anywhere in WoW. If you see someone riding one of these, rest assured, they’re a veteran of the MMO, got incredibly lucky, or spent some major cash to get them.
- Magic Rooster
- Black Proto Drake
- Black Qiraji Battle Tank
- Original Epic Mounts
1) Magic Rooster
- Availability: Yes
- Location: WoW TCG Card Game/Auction House
The WoW TCG was home to quite a few amazing WoW mounts, several of them being remarkably rare. One in particular was Magic Rooster, which was the reward alongside the card El Pollo Grande. The TCG featured “Loot Cards”, which would reveal a code if you scratched off the bar on it. Inputting them on the proper website would grant you an in-game item. These ranged from cookfires and tabards to mounts.
This is one that you can sell to other players to easily make a small fortune. It’s also the only chicken mount I can think of in the entire game. There are turtles, wolves, elementals, and robots, but only one chicken: Magic Rooster. If you have a spare $2,000 or so lying around, you can buy one on eBay.
2) Black Proto Drake
- Availability: No
- Location: Glory of the Raider (25 Player) achievement reward
Achievements are a huge part of WoW now, with many of them rewarding amazing mounts, such as Swarmite Skyhunter coming from Khaz Algar Glyph Hunter. There are some relatively simple achievement mounts I still don’t have — sadly, the Black Proto Drake was one I barely missed out on. It required you to complete Glory of the Raider (25).
That means you had to have a set of very specific achievements completed from Naxxramas, Obsidian Sanctum, and The Eye — all in 25-man raids. Some of these were brutal at the time, too. This mount was removed from the game — hence, only those who worked hardest in Wrath of the Lich King were recognized.
Something like this would continue in future patches, similar to the Ahead of the Curve achievements, which granted rewards for defeating specific raid bosses while they were still relevant.
3) Black Qiraji Battle Tank
- Availability: No
- Location: Gates of Ahn’Qiraj Event
The Black Qiraji Battle Tank was unlocked as a reward for being one of the players who rang the Scarab Gong within the first ten hours of the original person who sounded the gong. This required an incredibly lengthy quest chain, called The Sceptre of the Shifting Sands. Unfortunately, even though I was playing at the time, I was not online when the gong was sounded.
That means I missed out on the mount and potentially The Scarab Lord title. This mount is owned by fewer than 1% of the population. It stands out from the other Qiraji Battle Tanks for two reasons: it had a unique black color palette and it could be used outside of the AQ raids, unlike the others.
Your guild had to rally behind you for this one — it took so much work simply to get one Sceptre. If you’re one of the few players that have one, consider yourself fortunate.
4) Original Epic Mounts
- Availability: No
- Location: Specific mount vendors in pre-1.4 WoW
Though I was active during the Vanilla days of World of Warcraft, I did not hit level 60 in time for one of the Original Epic Mounts, not to mention the 900-1000 gold that it cost to buy one of these. If you reached level 60 by patch 1.4 and had the 1,000 gold, you could unlock one of two Epic mounts for certain factions.
- Human: Palomino, White Stallion
- Night Elf: Ancient Frostsaber, Nightsaber
- Dwarf: Black Ram, Frost Ram
- Gnome: Icy Blue Mechanostrider Mod A, White Mechanostrider Mod B
- Orc: Arctic Wolf, Red Wolf
- Tauren: Green Kodo, Teal Kodo
- Troll: Ivory Raptor, Mottled Red Raptor
They were incredibly expensive at the time, and you had at most, six months after launch to get these. There wasn’t a whole lot of time for players to get these rare mounts in WoW before they were replaced by armored versions.
