The Rust January update went live for all regions on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 11 am PT/ 7 pm BST/ 12:30 am IST (next day). The community has been excited for a force wipe, hoping to set off their losses and restart their grind once again. Finally, the day has come once again when every single Rust player can tune in, start from scratch, and establish their dominance on a server.
This article will provide a detailed description on everything that has been changed and added with the Rust January update. Read below to know more.
What to expect from the Rust January update
Map wipe
First and foremost, a brand-new Rust update might erase the previously generated procedural map for different servers. Each official and community server patching in the latest update can remove the ongoing map it had running for the servers to pave the way for the new one.
Players will lose every little bit of progress they have made previously on any map, and with the latest force wipe, they must rebuild from the bottom once again. It is one of the most fun aspects of the game that keeps drawing in veteran players over and over.
Blueprint wipe
Every single blueprint in the game will be wiped for the entire player base. Whether you've earned them in community servers, modded servers, or the official FP servers, a force wipe ensures that every player starts as a naked on the beach, with just a rock and torch in their hands.
Players will have to contest Monuments, build in strategic spots, and fight other players on their journey to collect Scrap and get their hands on the most useful items in the game. The ones who progress the fastest will undoubtedly have an advantage and will be able to dominate the entire server.

Shields and Siege weapons
While we initially believed that Shields would be part of the Rust January update, the latest dev blog from Facepunch Studios indicates that it will be released with the February force wipe.
As stated by the developers, both Shields and Siege weapons will be part of the February 'Primitive' update. They will improve the general quality of life surrounding primitive PvP gameplay, and provide players with unique new opportunities and approaches to this gameplay style.
Shields will improve hand-to-hand combat during the primitive stage, and Siege weapons will absolutely revolutionize raiding in Rust. Lastly, it has been confirmed that there will be four unique Siege Weapons in the game, which include:
- Battering Ram
- Siege Tower
- Catapult
- Ballista
Other than raiding, we believe that the community will have a hoot finding unique ways to use these tools and improve their gameplay experience.
