Should Diablo 4 bring back the Auction House system?

Could...or should Diablo 4 bring back the Auction House? Let's talk about it (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)

Diablo 4 has a wealth of amazing features, but what about an Auction House? Unfortunately, it doesn’t at this time, and that’s likely thanks to Diablo 3. The previous release, for those who didn’t play or don’t remember, featured a Real-Money Auction House. This was popular with quite a few players, but it turned toxic and sour very quickly.

The Auction House was a way for people to make real cash for in-game items, which was fun for some. However, it all but ruined the game for many people. Ultimately, the feature was removed, with the Loot 2.0 feature in the Reaper of Souls expansion.

With all of this in mind, could, or perhaps should Diablo 4 bring back any kind of Auction House? Perhaps to trade or sell Uniques? Let’s dive into this topic.

Does the Auction House belong in a future Diablo 4 update?

I don’t think a real-money Auction House belongs in Diablo 4. Part of me loved it, though. For full transparency, I made a nice chunk of change in it - alongside several of my friends. I made at least all of the money I spent on the game back, by selling powerful gear at a premium price.

It does completely undermine the process of getting loot in the game. However, it is also a fact that specialized, specific gear can be such a pain to farm in D4. This goes double for Uniques and Legendaries with specific stats or affixes on them. Being able to sell these Uniques at an Auction House in Diablo 4 isn’t the worst idea, but there have to be some limits on it. I don’t think Mythic Uniques like Tyrael’s Might should be sold on it.

That would dampen the joy and feeling of finally unlocking one if you can just spend, say, for example, 8 billion gold and get one. I imagine third-party sites and Discords offer gear for much higher prices. This is one of the reasons that I think this would help. Some people offer trades elsewhere and use this to rip people off.

There’s no guarantee or surety to spending your gold with other people on other third-party websites. Through a Diablo 4 Auction House, you can at least guarantee that someone’s not going to cheat you or rip you off. I think there’s some potential in having an Auction House back in the game.

I do understand that having one could lead to people only finding gear this way, instead of farming it up throughout endgame activities. There’s a real chance that if it were to come back to the game, it could just lead to it vanishing again for the same reasons. It’s not completely without merit, though.

It could be used for players to find very specific items that they need, or perhaps gear for an alt that they want to push through endgame content, and just don’t have the time to grind for it. There’s a space for it in the game, but the hardest part is making it so it’s not the only place to find gear.

I’m interested to see if Diablo 4 developers are interested in bringing it back, or if there’s a community call to bring the Auction House back. It might be that nobody really wants this to come back and that’s perfectly fine with me. But I think it’s a conversation worth having, now that we’re a year or so into this game’s life.
