Failsafe needs new specimens for her research, as a fresh weekly reset in Destiny 2 unlocked new steps in the story missions. Aside from the "A Rising Chorus" seasonal quest, players must keep track of another questline associated more with Failsafe rather than the Vanguard. This is the Specimen ID NES series; the latest weekly reset brought it 005.
With three similar research quests in Act 1, NES005 is the second in Act 2, with possibly more NES research missions scheduled in the coming weeks. The Act 2 questline of "A Rising Chorus" has six steps remaining, meaning that the next weekly reset might just bring in the final research mission of this act.
This article lists everything related to Specimen ID NES005 mission in Destiny 2 Episode Echoes Act 2, including the rewards, walkthrough, prerequisites, and more.
How to complete the Specimen ID NES005 mission in Destiny 2
1) Prerequisites
To obtain the Specimen ID NES005 quest in Destiny 2, you must complete week 2 of "A Rising Chorus Act 2." Specifically, after completing the Battleground Core mission, the seasonal questline will ask you to head to a coordinate for a specimen on Nessus. Follow the objective marker and keep interacting with it until you come across a Hive Acolyte corpse near the Watcher's Grave waypoint.
This will trigger the NES005 mission for Failsafe. The seasonal quest branches into two questlines from this point. One quest leads Ikora to end the seasonal mission, while the other leads towards the Specimen mission.
Speak with Failsafe one last time while the "A Rising Chorus" quest is active, and you will find the NES005 quest in your tab.
2) Bufo Bites
The first steps require players to collect Iridescent Radiolite to find nutritional clusters. The term "Bufo Bites" has been given by Failsafe. To do this, use the Piston Hammer inside either Breach Executable or Battleground to break the Vex pillar marked with a "star" on your screen.
Destroying this pillar will spawn Radiolite throughout the area, which will be marked with a 3D triangle marker, the same as the planetary materials in the open world. Collect 30 of these Radiolites to complete this step in the quest.
In Breach Executable, this pillar can be found after the first encounter. In Battleground, this can also be found after completing the first stage of the activity, specifically in the traversal section.
3) Nessus Flora
Spawn on the Watcher's Grave waypoint and head straight. You will immediately see seven objective markers pinpointing the locations of the collectibles required for you to pick up. Simply head over to each marker and 'collect' until you have seven.
4) Defeat 100 Vex on Nessus
This can be done anywhere on Nessus, meaning that seasonal activities and Lost Sectors will count towards progress as well. Breach Executable's Private mode will be the best choice for you, as you will be alone inside the game mode and free to take on as many Vex enemies as you want.
One notable Lost Sector includes The Orrery near the Artifact's Edge waypoint on Nessus. You can repeat this Lost Sector until you have 100 Vex kills.
5) Place Captain Jacobson
For the final piece of the questline, speak with Failsafe one last time and obtain Captain Jacobson. Place it just beside the Radio, within the small empty room. Rewards include season pass EXP and seasonal challenge completion. Pet the specimen to unlock a seasonal triumph.
