Operations in Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) are instanced, multiple boss, endgame raids that are designed for group play. Being subscriber-exclusive content, these raids cannot be attempted by free-to-play and preferred players. They are story-driven, have various difficulty modes, and are harder than the free-to-play group-based content called Flashpoints.

This article will list information, requirements, and drops that will help you get started in your SWTOR Operations journey. All information in this article is up to date as of update 7.5.

What are Operations in SWTOR?

Operations are instanced areas where subscribed players in an Operations group have to defeat waves of mobs and multiple bosses to complete their objectives. This PvE content is designed for groups of eight and sixteen players.

There are three difficulty modes for Operations: Story, Veteran, and Master. Story Mode Operations have daily lockouts, while those in Veteran and Master Mode have weekly lockouts. You can check your progress and lockouts by opening the Lockouts tab in the Activities window.

The raids require coordination and skill among groupmates since they are harder than Flashpoints. You would also have to follow various mechanics during boss fights.

While there is a groupfinder option for joining Operations, most players do not use it. So, joining groups through chat or forming your own would be the easiest way to start. You should also pick up the weekly Operations from the Operations Terminals on Fleet to avail more rewards.

Currently, these are the Operations available in the title:

  • Karagga's Palace
  • Eternity Vault
  • Explosive Conflict
  • Terror from Beyond
  • Scum and Villainy
  • The Dread Fortress
  • The Dread Palace
  • The Ravagers
  • Temple of Sacrifice
  • Gods from the Machine
  • The Nature of Progress
  • R-4 Anomaly

There are a few instanced Single World Boss Operations, namely:

  • Toborro's Courtyard
  • Colossal Monolith
  • Hive of the Mountain Queen
  • The Eyeless (Only available during the Rakghoul Resurgence event)
  • Xenoanalyst II (Only available during the Relics of the Gree event)

Requirements for Operations in SWTOR

On top of being a subscriber, your character should be at least level 80 to try out Operations. You must also be in an Operations group of eight or sixteen players to enter an instance.

Your gear rating varies depending on the difficulty you are playing. For Story Mode, the recommended minimum gear rating is 324, and for Veteran and Master Modes, your minimum recommended gear rating should be 335 and 340, respectively.

You get 324 rated gear drops from doing Veteran Flashpoints once you reach level 80. When you have a full set of 324 gear, you can delve into Operations easily. After you start with story Operations, you get 324 rated Operations gear that drops from bosses.

You also get a currency called OP-1 Catalyst, which you require for buying and upgrading Operations gear from the vendors in the Supplies section on Fleet. Once you have a full set of gear, you can also deconstruct extra Operations gear to get more OP-1s.

Finally, you should know your class and abilities well before starting Operations. You need to be familiar with your character's strengths, weaknesses, and rotation to perform well in matches. Being a group-based match that needs coordination, knowing your role and abilities will help you immensely.

A typical 8-man Story Mode Operations group consists of one tank, one healer, and six DPS. A 16-man Story group has one tank, and two healers, with the rest being DPS. In Veteran Mode, you have one tank and two healers with DPS in the other spots, but for a 16-man Veteran, you might want to have a third healer as a backup.

For Master Mode Operations, there should be two tanks in both 8 and 16-man groups. You can go with two healers for the 8-man and choose three to four healers for the 16-man.

Drops and rewards from SWTOR Operations

You get various drops and rewards from all bosses in SWTOR Operations. Standard drops include Op-1 Catalysts, Tech Fragments, and gear pieces. If you are playing Story Mode, you get green Tionese gear, and in Veteran and Master, you get blue Columni gear and purple Rakata gear, respectively. If you pick up and complete weekly Operations, you get a few extra Op-1 Catalysts and an extra gear piece.

The Final Boss in most Operations has a chance to drop random mounts as rewards. These mounts are bound to you and can only be traded with other members of your group. Bosses and Mobs can also drop rewards like decorations for strongholds and color crystals which you can keep or sell.

This article provides you with the basics before getting into an Operation. However, if you are new to it, you should always play Story Mode to get some in-game experience and familiarize yourself with the mechanics.
