Guard-spec Paladins in Tarisland are one of the best options to tank in the game. They bring group-wide buffs, solid AOE, and plenty of defensive abilities to keep themselves, and others alive. You could tank as a Barbarian Fighter or as a Warrior, but one of the most reliable and safe picks is the Guardian specialization. They may not hit as hard as their brethren, but they can’t be beaten when it comes to pure defensiveness.
On our recent tier list of best classes for PVE, Paladin stood out at the top of the heap when it came to tanking in Tarisland, and it’s not hard to see why. They have all the tools necessary to buff themselves and others and hold aggro on swarms of enemies. This article details what you need to know if you want to be a Guardian. Read on to find out.
How to play a Paladin tank in Tarisland
If you’re going to play Guardian Paladin in Tarisland now that the game has globally launched, your primary goal is to take hits for your team. They build Aegis Energy in battle, and each time an enemy attack Glances them, the meter builds more. Once you reach a certain point in the meter, your Flying Shield will grant a powerful buff.
You have a nice set of abilities as a Paladin. Holy Hammer is the skill you’re going to spam the most - it deals damage and increases your Glancing Rate. You use Flying Shield to deal damage as well, and if it hits, you gain a temporary shield. You’ve got Holy Fire, which is Consecration from WoW - it’s an AOE that helps you keep aggro.
Holy Sword deals damage and heals you, and it’s important to keep yourself alive with as a Paladin tank in Tarisland. You also have two big cooldowns: Holy Regen (A powerful heal) and Ardent Guardian (Buffs Dual defense). I don’t recommend spamming those, ever. Those are abilities to pop when you need extra mitigation.
In your skill set, you have two “Core Logic” options: Holy Sword and Holy Shield Bash. Holy Sword is ideal for single-target tanking, and Holy Shield Bash is for groups - though you can use Holy Shield Bash on a single target. You gain more defense in Holy Shield Bash, but you have more Shield in Holy Sword - so that’s something to keep in mind.
When it comes to your rotation, it’s important to start Holy Sword into Flying Shield. That buffs your Flying Shield. Then you pop your Holy Fire to do AOE damage and spam Holy Hammer until you reset. It’s a very simple rotation. When you have your Inscribe stone, your rotation will be a bit different: You'll activate it, then spam Holy Hammer and Flying Shield back to back for 6s. Below, however, you'll find the standard rotation:
Rotation
- Holy Sword -> Flying Shield -> Holy Fire -> Holy Hammer (spam until rotation resets)
When it comes to Ultimates, a few of them are excellent for Paladin tanks in Tarisland. I prefer Challenge Guardian as an AOE taunt, and Punishment since it’s an interrupt. There are going to be times when you need to interrupt a boss attack, so consider this one as well.
Stats and Talents for a Paladin tank in Tarisland
Tarisland as a game recommends a set of stats to focus on, but several people in the community disagree that this is as optimal as it could be for Paladin tanks. Instead of what the game tells you, you want to focus on the above stats, as recommended by YouTuber TheRPG, in his Paladin spreadsheet.
The reason Resilience is ahead of Glancing (which the game recommends as #1), is that you can’t get it in very many places. You need to prioritize it any chance you get. Any chance you can get this stat, focus on it.
This stat reduces the target’s Critical and Combo and has a chance of ignoring Crits and Combos for same-level battles. It’s incredibly important. Also below will be the talents you want to prioritize as you’re building your tank. Others may benefit you more, but these are the ones that felt the best to us:
- Divine Body
- Holy Fire+
- Thermal Recovery
- Flying Shield+
- Divine Seal
- Holy Regen+
