All of the characters in The First Descendant are good at very specific things. The real question is: which one should you focus on after you’ve picked your starter? That means, of course, that Ajax, Lepic, and Viessa will not be on this list. Ultimately, it’s up to you which character you pick, depending on what needs you want met or what gameplay style you’re looking for.
This list highlights a variety of characters and what role they’d fit - whether in group or solo play. It doesn't feature any of the Ultimate characters. While they're worth pursuing, the differences between them and the main Descendants are primarily cosmetic.
If you’re struggling to figure out where to invest your time, here are some The First Descendants characters worth unlocking.

Must-unlock characters in The First Descendant
1) Bunny
The First Descendant's Bunny makes this list for a few reasons. She will be unlocked shortly after you start via a quest chain anyway, and she’s truly excellent at wiping at groups of enemies (mobbing). There are going to be moments when she’s a must-have character to make clearing quest sections viable, such as during the Freyna unlock quest chain.
If you want a character that is fast, mobile, and excels at wiping out groups of enemies in short order, Bunny is 100% the character you should go out of the way to get.
2) Freyna
Few characters bring the pain to bosses quite like Freyna in The First Descendant, making her a must-have character. Freyna excels at bringing bosses down through her overwhelmingly powerful toxins/poison abilities, which shred through enemy health pools. While she’s good at taking out groups of enemies too, she’s far better at melting bosses.
As she brings with her toxic damage, Freyna is also fantastic at taking down Toxin Void Fragments. Void Fragments have a specific elemental requirement to take them down. In Freyna's case, she should always be around if you need to take down Toxin Void Fragments.
3) Valby
Valby is an excellent all-rounder, meaning she’s solid at all tasks in The First Descendant. A solid non-attribute character, Valby also has amazing AOE attacks, and lots of utility. She’s another excellent pick for players who need a strong mobbing character. On top of that, she has a cool look, and her Bubble Launcher is fun to use.
Valby has a useful Passive as well, with Water Intake giving her 30% decreased MP cost on all of her skills. This allows her to be way more aggressive in their use, as she creates puddles and bubbles of water everywhere she goes.
4) Gley
While Freyna is my personal favorite for bossing, there is one character that could be argued is much better at it: Gley. Her ability to sacrifice her health to shred enemies via Berserking is not something that should be discounted.
Gley has some of the best skills in the game, including her passive Thirst. This grants LIfe Spheres upon killing enemies, which heals her and stores Power of Life.
Gley is a high-risk, high-reward character and one of our favorites when it comes to bossing in The First Descendant.
5) Enzo
No matter what game I’m playing, the odds of me playing a support/utility character are pretty high at one point or another. One of my favorites in The First Descendant is Enzo, who brings plenty of great skills to the table. Whether it’s replenishing ammo, his shields, or increasing the maximum ammo capacity for his team, there are few more useful utility characters.
Enzo can also help deal damage through some of his skills, such as Perfect Support’s missile, which detonates upon colliding with the enemy. He’s more than capable of soloing content, but he will no doubt shine the most alongside friends.
