A mere three days into The First Descendant's release, Nexon has felt compelled to resort to Compensation rewards for its fledgling player base - which is admittedly quite a large one by now. The free rewards may keep some players happy for now, but the root problems might turn into a fleeting player base in a few weeks' time.
By logging in on or before July 8, you will see that your Mailbox pointer in Albion has turned Golden - you've got mail from Nexon. If you feel déjà vu while receiving it, that's because the same thing happened just the day before.
The Compensation rewards let you progress in The First Descendant slightly faster, but the reviews aren't getting any better
The First Descendant has been plagued by various troubles from all fronts since its launch. Less than half of its 15,000-plus reviews on Steam recommend the game at the time of writing, and many of these are due to technical gaffes.
Oddly enough, the reason why Nexon had to issue these redressal packages to players ties together the two most-cited criticisms against the game. The first one has to do with microtransactions, or more specifically, The First Descendant's premium currency.
Caliber is the premium currency of this free-to-play game - and by definition, you have to buy it with real money. Caliber is also what unlocks most cosmetics in the game, which you cannot otherwise get through just farming. So far so good, but the transaction bugged out for some players, leading to cases where they would not receive Calibers even after payment has left their wallets for it.
Ultimately, it turned out to be a delay - no players reportedly lost their Calibers. Still, this raised some eyebrows, which is why on the day of launch itself, the developers had to send 'Compensation rewards' to all players.
Today, the developers had to re-run the routine and send another round of reparation gifts to make up for the other big concern - server woes. The First Descendant servers handled the crowded launch somewhat successfully, but they crumbled under pressure on the second day (July 3).
After it recovered, the developers had to implement a six-hour server maintenance period to mend the servers. The Compensation rewards are the same as yesterday's: a series of boosters that gives you 30% extra Weapon Proficiency gain, Descendant XP, Gold, and Kuiper Shards for three days.
It will keep enterprising players engaged for longer, but Nexon isn't swaying the opinions of naysayers with this.
