Freyna is easily one of the most popular characters in The First Descendant at launch, and it’s not hard to see why. She demolishes groups of enemies easily, has lots of poison/venom DOTs to apply to enemies, and can even unleash them in AOEs. Give her a strong Assault Rifle and watch her mow down enemies with the greatest of ease. She may not have great mobility, but she makes up for it in sheer destructive power.
I tend to agree with where she's placed on our tier list. One of my favorite playstyles is “Poison AOE,” so if there’s a chance I can play that way in an MMO, I’m probably going to do it. Freyna delivers when it comes to damage, as well as fun gameplay.
Here’s how to add her to your collection of Descendants and properly build her.
How to unlock Freyna in The First Descendant
You have two options to unlock Freyna in The First Descendant: spend Caliber and unlock her immediately or go through her research quest chain. It’s much easier to spend real-world money instead of grinding missions to unlock specific items, but here’s what you need to know.
First, head to Vespers and complete the Battlefield Mission Ruins Path until you receive the Freyna Stabilizer. The next step is also in Vespers: take part in the Ruins Underground Entrance mission. This is where you grind until you unlock Freyna Spiral Catalyst.
The next part is in Timberfall, but you need to complete Supply Depot and Moonlight first. Then, complete the other purple missions in TImberfall, which will unlock The Shelter containing Freyna Enhanced Cells. Finally, you need the Code. Freyna's Code is found in Sterile Land and the Rockfall region.
You need to complete Rockfall: Vulgus Strategic Outpost. The reward you’re looking for is an Amorphous Material for Freyna. Also, keep in mind that this mission has a cooldown timer of five minutes, so you’ll have to wait to try again. If you were already grinding through this mission, you could have the Material already, so check your inventory first.
Next, complete the quest Obtain Freyna’s Equipment Material 2. You’ll find it in your quest logs, and you have to use Bunny. Ultimate Bunny does not appear to work for this mission. This is because you need her electric attacks to deal damage. Destroy the Void Fragment in Sterile Land’s Rockfall.
After that, complete Void Fusion Reactor - Sterile Land Rockfall Zone in the same zone you’re already in. At the end of this mission, you’ll be able to unlock the Amorphous Material and receive the code. Once you’ve done all of this, head back to Anais, and begin the research process
The First Descendant Freyna skill breakdown
I’m a huge fan of Freyna’s build, honestly. She has so many ways to inflict Poison and DOTs on her targets, and the more enemies that are affected, the greater her Toxic Skill Power is, thanks to Contagion Links. You want to open with Venom Trauma to start poisoning foes, and when close up, use Defense Mechanism to have a chance to add another poisonous DOT when struck.
You can also just throw poison down, with Putrid Venom, and obliterate foes with poison through her ultimate, Venom Baptism. Everything she does is based on the Toxic stat. If you’re a fan of constant DOTs on enemies and Poison, these attacks are going to be satisfying.
The First Descendant Freyna build: What are the best Modules to use?
When picking Modules for Freyna in The First Descendant, look for things that increase your Toxic Skill output - since all of her skills are Toxin-based. In addition, giving her access to her unique Skill Module Contagion is quite important.
Any chance you have to poison someone, you need to take it. From there, it’s all about reducing Skill Cooldown, so we can keep the poison train running as long as possible.
Best Freyna leveling build
Currently, we are still working on pumping more Crystallization Catalysts into our Freyna build. Here's the modules we used to level her:
- Increased HP
- Skill Extension - grants extra Skill duration
- Toxic Specialist - grants extra Toxic damage, so upgrade this Module before anything else
- Skill Insight - increases Skill Critical rate
- Sub-attack Module - any of them work. You won't ever need to be in melee range, so just pick whichever one is the highest level you have
- Increased Shield
- Nimble Fingers - decreases Skill cooldown
- Technician - Skill damage boost
- Skill Expansion - greater Skill range
- Increased DEF
As you level her up, Freyna deals a lot of damage just based on her kit alone - so all you'll need is to pump up the skill damage, and then get some defensive stats so you Freyna's only downside: survivability.
The build philosophy for Freyna is a little different from Saryn in Warframe. You're looking for the following stats in order of priority:
- Skill Power - The entire point is to nuke the map.
- Toxin Damage - Your Toxic Skill Power increases automatically with your passive, but the more the merrier.
- Skill Range - Damage more enemies, expand your toxic circle, profit.
- Skill CD Reduction - More uptime, more contagious activities.
- Skill Duration - Not quite as important, but still does benefit your Skills.
We will update this build as we finalize an end-game Freyna build.
Best Reactor for a Freyna build in The First Descendant
It’s pretty easy to figure out exactly which Reactor types you’re going to look for as Freyna in The First Descendant. Finding them in the game might be difficult, but that’s just how the game goes. Since her primary attribute is Toxic and she uses Dimension/Tech, you want to find Toxic Phase (Toxic/Dimension), or Toxic Mechanics (Toxic/Tech).
Best Weapon to use with Freyna in The First Descendant
The Fallen Hope Assault Rifle is the best weapon to use with any Freyna build. It synergizes with Freyna the same way Thunder Cage synergizes with Valby: The Perdition unique trait lets Fallen Hope proc an AoE damage upon killing poisoned enemies. And who better to poison enemies than Freyna?
External components to use on Freyna
Freyna isn’t exactly a tanky character, so you’re going to want to keep her alive as much as possible. She’s only remotely tanky when she’s got one of her abilities active (Defense Mechanism), so consider External components that increase the defensive stats: Max Shield, Max HP, HP Recovery, and then DEF in order of priority.
