The Ashlands update in Valheim brings forth a challenging new biome filled with lava and formidable creatures. Players must make thorough preparations before venturing into this hazardous environment. Even reaching the Ashlands requires careful planning due to the perilous boiling ocean surrounding it.
This guide will show you exactly what you need to do after reaching Aslands in Valheim and help you figure out what you need to do first. Here are 5 things you need to do as soon as you reach Ashlands.
Valheim: First 5 things you need to do in Ashlands
1) Use a shield generator to protect your base
Fire spreads quickly in the Ashlands biome, and players must avoid building anything wooden near the fires of this biome. During storms in the Ashlands, meteors can fall, resulting in damage and igniting your builds. To avoid this, players can use a shield generator to protect their base against the fires.
Building the generator requires iron, copper, and a shield core made at a level 2 artisan table. The shield generator needs bones to power it and can also protect you from ranged attacks, but its durability fades quickly, and it doesn’t stop mobs from entering and attacking.
2) Prepare Mead
Ashland is the only hellish biome in Valheim, which means most of the biome is covered in lava. Stepping into the lava will kill you very quickly. Drinking Fire resistance barley wine can offer some help against lava. Lingering Health Mead is also necessary because it increases health regeneration by 25% for 5 minutes. You can make it with sap, vineberry clusters, and smoke puffs.
Another useful Mead to make is Lingering Eiter Mead, which increases Eiter regeneration by 25% for 5 minutes. It can be made with sap, vineberry clusters, and mage caps. Drinking Meads is one of the best ways to survive in Valheim’s Ashlands.
3)Tame and Breed Asksvins
Asksvins are large creatures in the Ashlands that are known to have powerful attacks. You must tame Asksvins to increase your chances of survival in Ashlands. These are the only creatures in Valheim that can walk freely on lava, which makes them valuable mounts when exploring. Asksvins can be tamed and bred using berries found in the Ashlands.
Tamed and bred Asksvins produce Asksvin calves, allowing you to create an army of these potent creatures. While they're excellent as tames due to their attacks and ability to walk on lava, they can also be harvested for various items. Killing an Asksvin can yield Asksvin Tail, Asksvin Bladder, and Asksvin Hide, which can be used to craft a variety of items.
Players must note that to ride the monster, they must have an Asksvin Saddle which can be crafted in the Black Forge.
4) Farm Resources
You can start your journey in the Ashlands by gathering essential resources such as wood and stone. Wood can be obtained from the trees and stone from the boulders scattered around. Scorched trees in the Ashlands provide ash wood and charcoal resin. While farming, you will also find rocks and ruins; these yield grouse stone when mined.
Ancient pots are also something you can look for as they contain pot shards and hidden treasures like mead. Farming can cause noise, which can attract various monsters, so you must not farm resources close to your base. You can also look around for skeletons as they give bones and rare skeleton pieces when smashed. Some rare items like Sulfur rocks can be shot down for sulfur.
Farming resources provide you with various items that you can use for crafting or survival in Valheim’s Ashlands.
5) Craft Flametal Armor
There are two new armor sets: Flametal Armor and Asksvin Cloak. Flametal Armor is the only armor to provide 40% heat resistance allowing players to survive the heat of Ashlands. While the armor provides excellent protection against the harsh environment and many of the biome's creatures, it comes with the drawback of reducing your movement speed by 10%.
The Asksvin cloak increases your movement speed and draws less stamina while dodging, making it a valuable asset for fighting against Fader. Both of these items are Ashlands-tier and can increase the chance of your survival in Ashlands. Players can start their journey in the Ashlands by crafting these items first.
