In a surprise reveal at The Game Awards 2024, Game Director Rebecca Ford announced that Warframe 1999 will live on all platforms tomorrow. For clarification, this was addressed at a live crowd in Peacock Theatre, Los Angeles, meaning tomorrow is December 13, 2024, PST. Depending on how late into the day the update goes live, it may be December 14, 2024, in time zones like Australia and New Zealand.
If you're coming back to Warframe after a long time, there's a lot to chew on with Warframe 1999. For those excited to try out Coda weapons though, note that they are not coming till 2025 and have been decoupled from the main update.
Has the release time for Warframe 1999 been announced?
Digital Extremes has not revealed the release time for Warframe 1999, so it could be anytime from mid-day to evening in Ontario time (parallel to Eastern Time).
Generally, updates are released between 11 am and 2 pm EST on the announced dates, so that's our estimation for Warframe 1999's release time.
Warframe 1999 file size: How big of a download is it?
Warframe 1999 will be a substantially bigger download than last year's major content addition update, Whispers in the Walls. An official Reddit post from the developer has already confirmed the estimated download sizes for all platforms:
- PC: ~4.60 GB
- PlayStation 4: ~1.34 GB
- PlayStation 5: ~3.10 GB
- Xbox One: ~46.33 GB
- Xbox Series: ~46.44 GB
- Nintendo Switch: ~2.52 GB
- iOS: ~1.53 GB + 3.95 GB
Xbox users will have to undertake a much bigger download operation. Rather than just receiving the new update to patch on top of the game, the Xbox edition will require a full redownload of the game after it goes live.
As the developer explained, this is because the entire file structure has been re-optimized:
"Our Xbox Tenno will notice a larger than normal build size since we have remastered Warframe’s data to optimize total disc space used. As a result, a full redownload of Warframe on Xbox consoles is required."
The same will be true of Warframe iOS players:
"When Warframe updates via the App Store, it must redownload the base install (approximately 3.95GB) which overwrites the previous install. In other words, while CERT updates require a roughly 3.95GB download, these updates are not adding 3.95 GB to your overall app size."
How to prepare for Warframe 1999
Since there are no Prime Access releases tied with this update, you won't have to worry about Relic pack vendors. If you're coming back to Warframe 1999 after a long time, this is the next cinematic storyline update. It's set at the extreme end of the current main quest chain, meaning if you've fallen behind, you have to beat all the main quests before you get to experience Warframe 1999.
This includes The New War, Whispers in the Walls, as well as the very brief interactive cinematic, Lotus Eaters. Depending on how far behind you are, it may take quite a long time, especially if you haven't done New War yet.
A Warframe 1999 demo has also been up for a month now, so if you haven't gotten this early taste yet, it's still available. The update will also come with a Trinity rework and Nyx rework, so if you plan to get Primes for these, now is probably the best time to do so before the community market prices go up.
