Warframe is getting a Romance system with the major cinematic quest update this winter. In the upcoming Warframe 1999, the player character (Operator/Drifter) will fly back thousands of years into the past and have the option to romance the new characters introduced in this update. This dating minigame will be limited to six 'Protoframes', but who knows what the future holds?
A part of the playerbase has been yearning for a romance system in Warframe for a long time, and their prayers have finally been answered. In this article, we will go over everything we know about how the system will work in this game.
Warframe 1999 will let players romance the new characters
For a decade now, Warframe has had a syndicate standing system where you slowly gain trust with a specific organization. In Syndicates added in newer updates such as Heart of Deimos or Angels of the Zariman, this system also unlocks new backstory as these contingents confide shocking personal revelations to you in the higher ranks.
In other words, the fundamentals of a 'character affinity system' have always been present in Warframe. However, the 1999 update is the first time that Digital Extremes are adding a full-blown romance system.
Once you visit The Hex, the new Syndicate to be introduced in this update, any of its six characters can be romanced. They are the Protoframes, implied humanoid ancestors of the bio-technical vessels that we know as Warframes today. There are six characters you can romance:
- Arthur (Excalibur Protoframe)
- Lettie (Trinity Protoframe)
- Aoi (Mag Protoframe)
- Quincy (Cyte-09 Protframe)
- Amir (Volt Protoframe)
- Eleanor (Nyx Protoframe)
To simulate the 90s dating experience, much of the dating will be done through texting via KIMOnline, a fictional online messenger service in the world of Warframe 1999.
In an interesting turn of events, 90s boy band music will also be heavily featured in this update. There will be five original teen-pop songs produced by Digital Extremes. While they are not exactly there for the romance aspect, they sure help set the mood further.
There are no gender-related boundaries - you can romance any character regardless of your Drifter's implied sexuality. What's more is that the characters are voiced by award-winning talents, so get ready to form heartfelt and rewarding connections:
- Ben Starr (Clive from Final Fantasy 16)
- Amelia Tyler (The narrator from Baldur’s Gate 3)
- Kevin Afghani (Mario from Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Arnold from Genshin Impact)
- Alpha Takahashi (Hanako Arasaka from Cyberpunk 2077)
- Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge (one of the player voices from Forza Horizon 5)
- Melissa Medina (Starfield, FF14 Dawntrail)
