Warframe players are known for chasing their goals of reaching a new high, whether it be attaining the level cap on missions or running survival ones for days. One such player managed a DPS output so great that the game failed to calculate it and ended up breaking itself, as evidenced in a Reddit post shared by u/ricothebox.
Critical hits are a major mechanic in Warframe and serve as a method of modifying the damage profile of a direct hit. They can work with other offensive mechanics and have additional effects based on the source and target.
Warframe player hits so hard that the math stops working
In a Reddit post on the official Warframe subreddit, u/ricothebox posted a screenshot of their Kullervo in action or rather, the aftermath of their rush toward the extraction. The screenshot features two damage values against an enemy combatant, with one showing 62,759,472!!! and the other showing a mere 4!!!. And yes, the exclamation marks are important.
What is astounding about these values is the one-digit red crit existing alongside the eight-digit damage: the latter is a regular occurrence in Warframe's current landscape. Looking at the face value (no pun intended), a damage popup of 4!!! can seem like a Critical Hit rolling a low value. However, the damage calculation in Warframe works quite differently.

Critical hits in Warframe are affected by both Critical Chance and Critical Damage stats on weapons and mods. Critical Damage stat affects the final value of the Critical hit, while Critical Chance is solely responsible for modifying its nature. The simplest calculation is that Critical Chance has six breakpoints, each represented by separate colors and symbols.
These breakpoints are as follows:
Another interesting thing about this picture is the bafflingly low value of the hit, despite being a Tier-6 crit. Many in the comments section have speculated how the damage calculation has essentially doubled, going over the maximum integer value in-game (2,147,483,647) and throwing out random values after that.

There have been many cases where players have reported dealing billions of damage but with a seemingly negative value on-screen. In the case of u/ricothebox, 4!!! is the game failing to calculate an insanely high hit and coming up with a hilariously low value.
In true Warframe fashion, many players shared their experiences with absurd damage values, making memes and educating newer players. That said, this raises a valid concern over games with damage value pop-ups becoming extremely confusing to understand after years of power creep, one which Warframe will have to address in the future.
