Level 40 is the maximum level a character can reach in The First Descendant. You can reach this pretty naturally without grinding levels. If you follow the missions and quests, you will eventually earn enough exp to reach the level 40 cap. This level is quite necessary for the difficulty curve in the late game of The First Descendant.

Gaining character levels is vital for the character you want to main. With each character level-up, you will gain a small boost to its stats. Leveling up also unlocks various skills which are the main lifeblood of your character. This is why leveling up your character should always be your first focus in The First Descendant.

At the time of writing, you can level up your character and weapons proficiencies in The First Descendant. Other than them, there are Mastery Levels. These are account-wide levels that are the main progression system of the game. You gain mastery by leveling up Descendants, completing missions, and more.

The max cap for the Mastery Level in The First Descendant is level 30. Unlike the character levels, gaining Mastery Levels requires a lot of grinding. You can complete achievements, kill a certain type of monster for the first time, complete missions, and defeat bosses to gain it.

Gaining Mastery Levels is a mechanic utilized by the game to make you more familiar with it. The higher the level, the more proficient you are with The First Descendent. Currently, not many goals are available once you reach the max cap on all levels, so you don’t need to rush your level grinding.

The max level of weapons in The First Descendant is 100. To get a lvl 100 weapon to drop, you have to face Monsters of that level. While Hard Void Intercept bosses can be over lvl 100 themselves, they can only drop up to level 100 weapons right now.

However, you can increase a weapon's actual level by using 'Weapon Level Transmission', which uses a Phase Exchanger, or a Precision Phase Exchanger in the case of an Ultimate weapon.

Precision Phase Exchanger is also the only way to increase the level of Ultimate weapons and keep them relevant for your current level of content.
