Leveling in Once Human is a core part of character progression, as it allows you to survive against tougher enemies by crafting better weapons and armor. Additionally, each region in the game is balanced around a particular level, so rushing through the main story without reaching the appropriate level will make enemies extremely difficult to beat.
That said, you can reach level 50 — which is the maximum level in Once Human — by doing a variety of activities.
This guide covers everything to know about the leveling system in Once Human, including how to gain levels.
How to gain levels in Once Human
As mentioned, 50 is the maximum level your character can reach in Once Human. But, unlike in many other MMOs, you aren't limited to doing a select few activities to gain Experience Points (EXP). You can level up to 50 by doing almost anything in the game.
Here are all the activities that can help you reach the maximum level in Once Human:
- Crafting: Crafting any item provides EXP in the game.
- Killing enemies: Defeating enemies and bosses is one of the best ways to gain levels in Once Human.
- Quests: Progressing through the main story, side quests, and area quests also provides a significant amount of EXP.
- Journey achievements: You can also acquire a lot of EXP by completing achievements in the Journey system. While they initially overlap with your primary objectives of crafting various items and progressing through the main story, there are many achievements related to doing completely random activities in the world. These include taking a picture of a deer, adding someone to your friend list, or even changing the color of your vehicle.

What do you get from leveling up in Once Human?
Leveling in Once Human is essential for acquiring Ciphers, also known as Meme Points. These can be spent in the Memetics tech tree, unlocking various facilities and structures, along with basic to advanced-level blueprints.
Additionally, every five levels, you can unlock one of four available Memetic Specializations, each providing powerful bonuses to different facets of gameplay. For example, the Electronic Recycling Memetic Mastery increases your yield of Metal Scraps and Electronic Parts when disassembling junk items in the game.
