It may not be clear where you upgrade gear in WoW The War Within. While Dornogal is a fantastic new city, it’s not always 100% clear where you can take advantage of certain amenities. Fortunately, upgrading your gear is possible at almost any time while you're in this hub city. Although you might want to be careful about spending Valorstones or other upgrade currencies early in the expansion, having a clear idea of where you need to go is going to be helpful.
At this time, we don’t know of any other places to upgrade your gear other than the hub city Dornogal in WoW The War Within. This could change later in the expansion, for example, if areas like Dalaran become accessible again. If this does change, we’ll update the article accordingly.
How to upgrade gear in WoW The War Within
You can upgrade gear in WoW The War Within by visiting Cuzolth and Vaskarn in Dornogal (/way 51.8 42.1). Just look for the sign outside that reads Mythic Aspirations when you hover over it with your cursor. These NPCs both serve an important purpose when it comes to upgrading your gear throughout this expansion.
Cuzolth does the actual upgrading of your gear in the game. Interact with them, and drag the piece of gear you want to upgrade into the UI that pops up. That is, of course, if you have gear that can be upgraded. Your items need to be at least Item Level 558 if you want to upgrade them.
Depending on the item level of the gear you’re upgrading, it’s either going to cost Valorstones or a combination of Valorstones and Harbinger Crests. There are four varieties of Harbinger Crests: Weathered, Carved, Runed, and Gilded. Each of these is tied to different levels of gear.
This naturally means that you will need to clear more challenging content to get the better Harbinger Crests, as you progress through Season One and beyond of World of Warcraft. However, one nice feature of this expansion is that once you reach a certain item level in that slot, upgrades you make later in that slot will be discounted, up to that item level.
While that doesn’t sound great on its face, it affects all characters in your Warband (Warband-Wide). That means your alts will have an easier time getting geared, based on the item level of the gear your main character has. As long as you have the resources, you can come to this vendor and upgrade your gear.
