Destiny 2 expansions offer the main meat on top of the game's F2P model. These are DLCs that had a specific model each year, offering fans a few permanent in-game features and a few temporary ones. Newer players won't be able to purchase the temporary content, such as seasons from previous expansions. However, some permanent content has stood the test of time and can be bought today.
This article lists every expansion/edition you should purchase as a new player in Destiny 2. The DLCs mentioned here will enhance your experience as a Guardian in the SOL system.

Best expansions to purchase for Destiny 2 in 2024
1) The Final Shape + Annual Pass
At the time of writing this article, Destiny 2 The Final Shape is still in its first episodic run. There will be three Episodes in this expansion year, from June 2024 to February 2025. Hence, gamers have seven months, which is enough time to purchase the full Annual Pass edition.
The reason why you should buy The Final Shape and the Annual Pass as a new player is because it is the only edition currently serving both the expansion and the seasonal pieces of content.
Additionally, any Dungeon Keys will be provided to you for free. However, new players should note that all content from only the three Episodes will go away once the third Episode ends in February 2025.
Another reason to buy The Final Shape is because it is Destiny 2's best expansion in terms of content, story, and everything major. The Annual Pass will provide you with the follow-up story to the expansion. The only downside to purchasing this expansion as a new player is the storytelling, where they may feel left out.
If you liked the gameplay and the overall endgame content loop, you can then head to our next suggestion.
2) Legacy collection
Destiny 2 Legacy Collection is a great edition for both newer and returning players who have no idea where to begin. It grants players every expansion from Year 2 to Year 6, including the mini ones such as the 30th Anniversary pack, and three Dungeons. Note that Dungeons from The Witch Queen and the Lightfall year need to be paid for separately.
Hence, if you are looking to experience Destiny 2's story, Raids, Dungeons, and more from Years 2 to 6, then the Legacy Collection is for you.
Pit of Heresy, Shattered Throne, and Grasp of Avarice are Dungeons from Years 2, 3, and 4. If you end up liking the content from this edition, you have already covered 90% of the game. The Dungeons that need to be purchased separately from The Witch Queen and the Lightfall include Duality, Spire of the Watcher, Ghosts of the Deep, and Warlord's Ruin.
All four Dungeons will grant you powerful Legendary and Exotic weapons, all of which are essential for endgame content.
3) Lightfall
If The Final Shape and the Legacy Collection don't fit your current budget, you can go for the Lightfall expansion, or you can wait for a sale. This single expansion will grant you access to multiple Exotic weapons that will benefit your character's builds and the powerful Strand subclass for all three characters.
While Lightfall was received negatively for its narrative, it still is a great expansion only if Strand and weapons are taken into account. Aside from this one, if you want to purchase any other expansion, then it would be best to save up and purchase the Legacy Collection as a whole.
