Captain Flameheart or King Flameheart is the main villain of Sea of Thieves. His appearance in the title was highly anticipated by the gaming community, ever since his reveal in the cinematic trailer at E3 2016. Even though he has only been infrequently mentioned since then, he was properly integrated into the game in 2019 with The Seabound Soul content update.

According to Sea of Thieves, the name Captain Flameheart is used by an adopted child and his father. However, the game currently only refers to the father as Flameheart. Even though the main villain of Sea of Thieves is the senior Captain Flameheart, his adopted child makes an appearance in the game as an NPC called the Servant of the Flame.

There is a recurring theme in Sea of Thieves called "head in the sky," which refers to the appearance of Captain Flameheart. His appearance in the sky was memorable and acted as a signal to get ready for an encounter. As you are playing through the game, you will often see his ghost appear in the sky. This generally taunts other players and starts naval warfare where you will be forced to fight ghost ships.

Captain Flameheart was born during a war and has been a bully since childhood. When he grew up, two men who were part of the Grand Maritime Union visited him to steal things from his house to make him pay for the crimes his father committed as a pirate. However, he defended himself from those men. This is when he chose to become a pirate like his father.

He found a new ship for himself and gathered a crew to start a new life as a pirate. He made it his life's mission to end Grand Maritime Union for good, which is when he was named Captain Flameheart by his crew. When Flameheart finds out about the Sea of Thieves, he decides to kill other pirates. During this time, he also encountered and adopted an abandoned baby.

Since Captain Flameheart was raising the adopted son as if it were his biological son, he made it his mission to provide him with the best life and education possible. The captain also taught his son life skills, such as swimming and sailing the high seas. Flameheart even tells his child stories that influence him to walk in his father's footsteps and become a pirate to hunt the Sea of Thieves.

Season 13 introduces the Burning Blade update to the Sea of Thieves. Here Captain Flameheart wishes to acquire the eponymous ship for himself. To do so, he joins the crew and leads a rebellion to overthrow the captain of the shop. Later he claims the vessel as his own. By using the newly formed resistance, he overthrew the ship's captain and acquired the Burning Blade for himself and his crew.

To celebrate the acquisition, everyone on the ship decided to pour themselves a drink; however, they all were cursed which led to Captain Flameheart becoming the Skeleton Lord. Following this, he soon acquires the power of Ashen Lords and blesses Red Ruth and his crew with the same. Red Ruth used these powers to invent a cursed cannon for the Burning Blade.

With these newly acquired powers and the invention of cursed cannons, Captain Flameheart became unstoppable. He terrorized the seas to take down the Sea of Thieves. Other cadavers and pirates supported his cause and agreed to join his fleet. With their help, Flameheart defeated the Pirate Lord and sank his Magpie's Wing.
