WoW Classic SoD Phase 4 datamine shows "super duper real" Ashbringer: Can it be true?

A fascinating bit of datamining was done for WoW Classic SoD Phase 4 - could the Ashbringer finally be real? (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)

WoW Classic SoD Phase 4 could bring the Ashbringer sword to life if Wowhead’s latest datamining comes to pass. It’s very much worth noting that the description of the item that would lead to the legendary blade is quite ridiculous. This is very much a dream of players worldwide, to finally be able to wield the undead-slaying legendary weapon of Highlord Mograine.

Sure, the Legion expansion gave all Paladins an “Ashbringer” to wield, and the Corrupted Ashbringer already existed in Vanilla, but those are hardly the same thing. WoW Classic SoD Phase 4 could potentially see the arrival of that legendary Ashbringer, but don’t get your hopes up.

Disclaimer: This article is very much speculation on the future of WoW Classic SoD Phase 4.

Could WoW Classic SoD Phase 4 really bring the Ashbringer to life?

One thing we know for sure about WoW Classic SoD Phase 4, is that it was delayed, which is likely not the fault of the Ashbringer. Phase 3 left a sour taste in some players' mouths, with them feeling like it lacked the same allure and appeal that the game mode did at the start. Many changes have to be made before the next phase of the game can launch.

However, through some careful datamining, after the Phase 4 Development Notes were released, an item called PLACEHOLDER_ASHBRINGER_QUESTITEM_01 was found. It has the following, very ridiculous description:

“PH - Totally real, not-fake quest starter item for Ashbringer quest. Super duper real. Totally not a joke.”

Originally, the questline Good and Evil was supposed to lead to the Ashbringer in WoW, and WoW Classic SoD Phase 4 has a chance to do something truly monumental. The weapon itself is a legendary two-handed sword, with a chance on hit to blast a target with fire for 700 damage. The blade's name is a reference to Highlord Mograine being so skilled with it that his swings turned the Undead to ashes.

During the original reveal of WoW Classic SoD, we got a brief tease of something that could be connected to this: A remake/rework of Scarlet Monastery. Since the new raids for each sector have all been classic dungeons, transformed into raids, why not in Phase 4? Not much is known about the upcoming update to Season of Discovery anyway.

Sure it's unlikely - but wouldn't it be nice to see Ashbringer unlockable in WoW Classic SoD Phase 4? (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)

What better place to find the beginning of the Ashbringer, than the Scarlet Monastery? After all, Mograine was a former member of the aggressive, anti-undead order. While I do want to say this is incredibly unlikely, it would be a huge move, and could push a number of players to aggressively hunt down the legendary weapon.

However, there’s a chance this could be an Alliance-only weapon. Highlord Mograine was a human, and there is a chance it could be a faction-exclusive legendary. With that in mind, it’s worth noting that Wowhead also found the Axe of Cenarius, which was wielded by Broxigar the Red. Perhaps both factions will get a legendary weapon to chase?

This is quite an exciting bit of speculation for WoW Classic SoD Phase 4. Information is very scarce, and it’s clear that no matter what, Blizzard will deny the existence of either of these weapons being in the game, until something concrete is found.

However, it’s a very interesting thought. What better way to get people excited, than to tease legendary weapons to chase? It will feel like going after Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker all over again.
