WoW The War Within’s developers recently confirmed a major change to farming legacy raid cosmetics. Earlier in the beta test for The War Within, fans noticed that when they completed a quest that gave gear rewards, they’d unlock every outfit - regardless of whether or not they could equip it. This made unlocking cosmetics so much easier, but this was originally declared to be a bug. The developers have stated this will not be the case going forward.

However, a post from the World of Warcraft development team has since walked this back, and it’s for the best. WoW players in The War Within will be able to acquire cosmetics, including legacy raids, at a much faster pace than before. Players went from frustrated to elated very quickly - including this player.

WoW The War Within already lets players farm some legacy raid cosmetics easier, via the Warband bank. Raid Gear Tokens were made Warbound, so players could throw them in the bank, and distribute them to alts as needed. However, in the grand scheme of things, Raid Gear Tokens aren’t used in every raid.

While there are gear tokens for almost every raid, the earlier, Classic raids do not feature these. Gear tokens didn’t really start appearing until Karazhan (The Burning Crusade), after all. With the Gear tokens being made Warbound and the overall legacy raid cosmetic change, it will be quite a bit easier to find this stuff in WoW The War Within.

This came courtesy of Community Manager Kaivax on the WoW forums. They stated that the developers are working on a fix so that non-cosmetic, class-restricted gear can have its appearance collected by any class. Additionally, all the appearances from non-cosmetic item rewards will be granted, regardless of who unlocked them.

They also plan for it to be retroactive, so whatever you unlock before this patch rolls out will be unlocked. The idea is that players won’t have to grind multiple classes to get all the cosmetic looks they’re after. However, it won’t be at launch. According to Kaivax, this change will be in the next patch after The War Within launches later this month.

While it only affects a few sets of gear, these are sets that can take an inordinate grind, and having to do it on every single alt can be frustrating. It felt weird to give players the Gear Tokens as a Warbound thing, and not do the same for the class-restricted loot that came before that system was implemented. Unfortunately, there’s no confirmed date on when this will show up, only that it’s in the patch after launch.
