WoW player gets incredibly rare mount after 10 years of patience

One thing that keeps WoW players coming back for more is the chance to get a rare mount. As a long-time World of Warcraft veteran myself, there are rides I’ve been chasing for anywhere between 10 and 20 years and still haven’t been lucky enough to see drop, much less win one of them for myself. The mounts I always wanted include Rivendare’s Deathcharger, Invincible, and the one Redditor Hongork wound up picking up — the Time-Lost Proto Drake.

In a chance encounter while casually camping in the Storm Peaks, the incredibly rare Time-Lost Proto Drake was found by the WoW player’s wife before he got the lucky drop. While there are many rare mounts in World of Warcraft, this one — for at least one player — is rare no longer.

u/hongork recently took to the WoW subReddit to talk about an incredibly lucky rare-mount find. While in the Storm Peaks, his wife noticed a very familiar, rare NPC flying nearby. After alerting him to it, the player realized that the Time-Lost Proto Drake was in the region.

u/hongork joked that his wife was mad for a little while because he got the kill and she didn’t. For those who aren’t familiar, the Time-Lost Proto Drake is a golden proto drake NPC that flies around the Wrath of the Lich King area called the Storm Peaks. This mount shares a spawn timer with another NPC (Vyragosa), making it even harder to find.

This rare mount has a spawn time of roughly 2-8 hours, shares a spawn with another NPC, and doesn’t typically survive long when it’s out. The player used a rare finder addon in WoW. It alerts you when a rare enemy you haven’t killed is nearby — which did not trigger when the Time-Lost Proto Drake flew by.

It took his wife pointing it out to catch the dragon appearing at all. In addition, he killed it on the side of a cliff — somewhere most players would be unable to loot. What came clutch was the fact that they were a hunter with the “fetch” skill, so their pet could go grab the item.

While the mount itself is almost 100% guaranteed to drop, the actual NPC is the rare part of the equation. It’s something thousands of players have spent time waiting, camping, and patrolling for.

When the Time-Lost Proto Drake spawns in WoW, this rare mount will spawn in one of four places. It then goes on a little patrol, down a predetermined path, and continues to do this until someone kills it. It will spawn in from one of the locations below, and fly in circular paths along that point.

I’m one of the many players who have been trying to farm this mount. As I wrote this article, I logged in on my Retribution Paladin to see if it happened to be around at the time. Unfortunately, that was not the case, so my vigil continues.

However, for this player, they can stop camping in the Storm Peaks and find another rare mount to chase down. While others still hunt, Hongork is now free from the chains that bound them to Storm Peaks.
