WoW The War Within - How to change loot specializations

Changing loot specializations in WoW The War Within is something you may occasionally want to do. Some players might not even know that it’s an option since it’s not something put right in your face. With classes that have multiple roles they can fulfill, or even multiple DPS roles that have different stat requirements, gearing these up so you can actively play them in harder content is important.

However, it’s so much slower to swap to Holy Paladin and gear up if Retribution is your default specialization. So, instead, you can take your high-powered Retribution Paladin into WoW The War Within content, swap your loot specialization, and gear up that way. Here’s what you need to know to do so.

By right-clicking your portrait in WoW The War Within, you can change your loot specialization whenever you’d like. You’ll find it under Loot Options. Just hover over Loot Specialization, and pick the spec you’d prefer to get gear for whenever you’re completing content.

In WoW The War Within, your default loot specialization is whatever spec you’re playing at the moment. So if you’re on a Paladin, and playing Retribution, as I am, the default specialization will be to drop gear that you can use in that spec. You can change to any spec at any time, so you can try for, in my case, Holy or Protection gear.

There’s one more thing to keep in mind when changing loot specializations in World of Warcraft: The Great Vault. This is a location where you get powerful gear rewards for taking part in in-game activities like Delves, Raids, and Heroic/Mythic/Timewalking Dungeons. Each week, you can open the vault to claim rewards.

If you’re trying to get gear for a specific specialization, you will need to change to the right loot specialization before you open The Great Vault. Once you open it, that’s the gear you’re going to get for the week, and there’s no changing it.

It’s also important to double-check your loot specialization if you occasionally change it around to gear up other builds. That way you don’t find yourself picking up Holy gear when you were hoping to loot a powerful new sword or shield for Protection spec.
