Many young and aspiring drivers dream of reaching the pinnacle of NASCAR, and one who has turned that dream into reality is Harrison Burton.
Driving the No. 21 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for Wood Brothers Racing, Harrison follows in the footsteps of his father, Jeff Burton, a renowned driver who clinched 21 NASCAR Cup Series victories and was once regarded as the top driver in the series.
Harrison has been described as an aggressive and a fighter, by one rival Noah Gragson and good friend Todd Gilliland.
Early NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Championship and Wins
Harrison received a go-kart from his father Jeff at the age of two. He shifted to Quarter Midgets when he was four years old. Throughout his USAC Quarter Midget Championship career, he won the championship thrice.
The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Championship was a proving ground for Harrison. He started his career in the series in 2016 but only competed in three of eight races and recorded two top-10 finishes. His breakthrough season in the series came a year later in 2017 when he won the championship by a narrow margin of eight points over Todd Gilliland, his best friend. In that season, he won a total of five races.
Harrison also had a good four-year stint in the ARCA Menards Series where he won three races out of 17 he competed in.
NASCAR Xfinity Wins
Due to Harrison’s performances in lower categories, he was given a chance to showcase his talent in the NASCAR Xfinity Series by Joe Gibbs Racing for eight races in 2019. After Christopher Bell moved up to the NASCAR Cup Series, JGR replaced him by giving the No.20 Toyota Supra to Harrison for the 2020 season.
It was Harrison’s stepping-up season as he won his first Xfinity Series race, the Production Alliance Group 300 at Auto Club Speedway, Fontana, California. Overall, he won four races in that season propelling him towards winning the Rookie of the Season award.
The 2021 season of the NASCAR Xfinity Series was a bit of a mediocre season for Harrison as his performances were consistent but he was not able to win a race.
Even though the 2021 season of the NASCAR Xfinity Series was a bit lackluster for Harrison, his potential as a future top driver was not undermined as Wood Brothers Racing signed him full-time for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season.
