They have won 5 drivers championships in the NASCAR Cup Series and 4 championships in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Joe Gibbs Racing was founded by Joe Gibbs, who is best known for his work as a coach in Pro Football leagues. The team was run by his son, J.D. Gibbs, until his death in 2019. Joe GIbbs Racing started operations in the NASCAR Cup Series in 1992. The team upgraded to a two-car team in 1999, after they built their own facility in 1998 in Huntersville, North Carolina. Denny Hamlin joined the team in 2006, leading to them fielding three full-time cars. Joe Gibbs Racing started fielding four cars in the NASCAR Cup Series by 2015. The team sold minority stakes in 2023 to Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE Group) and Arctos Partners in 2023.
Joe Gibbs Racing entered a partnership with 23XI Racing in 2021. 23XI Racing is a team run by JGR driver Denny Hanlim. The team is in a technical partnership with JGR and used to share pit crew with the team until the 2023 season. Joe Gibbs Racing started developing their own engines for the NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series in 2012 partnering with Toyota Racing and Development.

Joe Gibbs is a former football coach and NASCAR team owner. Joe Jackson Gibbs was born on November 25, 1940 in Mocksville, North Carolina in the United States. He served as the head coach of the football team, Washington Redskins, in the National Football League. Gibbs' tenure lasted from 1981 to 1992, and 2004 to 2007 for the team. Over the 16 seasons he has coached the team, he led the team to 3 Super Bowl wins, 9 playoffs appearances and 4 NFC Championship titles. Gibbs was awarded the NFL Coach of the Year honors in the years 1982 and 1983. He is also the only coach in the competition to have won the Super Bowl with three different quarterbacks.
Joe Gibbs has been inducted to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2020, for his work as a team owner. He is also a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame becoming the only coach to achieve a place in both NASCAR and Pro Football Hall of Fame. Gibbs was a part of the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time team.
Heather Gibbs
Heather Gibbs became the co-owner of the team after her husband, Coy Gibbs’ death. She is a mother to 4 children and also a realtor. She was praised by Joe Gibbs, in an interview he gave to NBC Sports: “She’s strong. When we have a meeting and we bring up stuff, she’s not sitting back. I love that because I think that’s really helped us,” said Joe.

J.D. and Coy Gibbs were the past owners of the team. They were the founders of the team alongside their father, Joe Gibbs. J.D. Gibbs was a former professional stock car racing driver. He is a part of the West Coast Hall of Fame where he was inducted in 2019. The same year, he passed away due to a degenerative neurological disease, while he was still leading Joe Gibbs Racing. Coy Gibbs was a co-owner of the team. According to NBC, he was supposed to take the helm of the team once Joe Gibbs stepped down. Coy was a former professional stock car racing driver and also the former assistant coach of Washington Redskins. He passed away in 2022.

Joe Gibbs Racing Records in the NASCAR Cup Series, Truck Series and Xfinity Series
Joe Gibbs Racing have been participating in all three NASCAR Series ever since their debut in the sport. The team fields regular cars in the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series. Joe Gibbs Racing have won 437 races cumulatively in the Cup and Xfinity Series.
The team was also a regular participant in the Craftsman Truck Series until 2010. JGR moved into a partnership with Kyle Busch Motorsports providing them with engines. Their drivers raced directly in the teams of KBM. However when Kyle Busch Motorsports stopped operations in 2022, this marked the end of Joe Gibbs Racing in the Truck Series. They have not fielded any cars in the Truck Series since 2022.
