Finally, two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch earned a solid finish after a string of poor finishes. He finished P9 in a rain-shortened Grant Park 165 at Chicago Street Course on Sunday. With a top-10 result, he hopes it marks the beginning of a positive momentum.
The P9 finish was nothing short of relief and satisfaction for Kyle Busch and his #8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet team, as it came at a good time for them, and they still have a chance to make the playoffs.
It was his first top-10 result in the last eight races and came after the race at the Kansas Speedway in May.
Speaking to NBC Sports about his top-10 result in Chicago, Busch said:
“We had a solid finish today at the Chicago Street Race in our zone Chevrolet.
"Hopefully, this is the start of some positive momentum for our Richard Childress Racing team. It’s cool to get the finish that we deserve. Great job by Randall Burnett and everyone at RCR and ECR. It was a good day for sure.”
With six races remaining in the regular NASCAR Cup Series season, Kyle Busch needs a checkered flag in one of them to lock his berth in the playoffs. He's 17th in the Cup series points table and 98 points behind the elimination line to Chris Buescher, who's 16th.
Kyle Busch points tire strategy helped to earn top-10 result at Chicago
Before the start of the final stage, the former NASCAR Cup Series champion switched to slick tires. He admitted that this decision was a turning point, as it allowed him to overtake several cars and finish inside the top-10.
Reflecting on the challenges of running on wet conditions at the Chicago Street Race, Busch said to NBC Sports:
“The way the race played out we were able to get on slicks at just the right time late in the race, and we passed a ton of cars. For some reason, we really struggled on the wet tire setup. The car felt like it was on ice, so we have work to do to make that better.”
