Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson claimed his fourth win of the 2024 season in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Following the victory, Larson expressed his feelings, emphasizing the significance of winning NASCAR’s crown jewel race in the presence of Rick Hendrick.
It was the second time Rick Hendrick, the owner of HMS with a net worth of $1 billion (according to Celebrity Net worth), has attended the NASCAR race this season. The last time he attended the race was at season-opener Daytona 500, where William Byron took the checkered flag.
Speaking to SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Kyle Larson reflected on his Brickyard 400 win and how much it meant to win in the presence of Rick Hendrick.
After the race, here’s what Larson said:
“What makes it most special is having Rick here and having Jeff here. We haven't had Rick with us at the racetrack since I think the Daytona 500, so he's been through a lot this year, and it just means a lot to have him here.”
Larson continued:
“Get to celebrate, get to be out next to him kissing the bricks, and just with everything that went on with May and all that to come here and win the Brickyard 400, it just feels amazing.”
Kyle Larson took command of the race in overtime period when he needed the most and then ultimately held off the challenge of Ryan Blaney and Tyler Reddick in the second overtime restart. A caution came out on the final lap for Ryan Preece’s stalled car, which ended the race under caution.
The 31-year-old HMS driver now has three wins in NASCAR’s four crown jewel races, including the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Kyle Larson feels the Brickyard 400 win at Indy more like destiny than redemption
Two months after competing in his Indianapolis 500 debut, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion returned to the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway to complete a redemption arc on Sunday.
The bad weather delayed his Indianapolis 500 run and his trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway in May and couldn’t compete the Memorial Day Double Weekend.
In the post-race interview, when a reporter asked about whether this Brickyard 400 victory feels like redemption, Larson replied:
“I don't know, I don't really know if I feel like it's redemption; I just think it's kind of all just odd that it all kind of came back around and we were to win this, and just the way we won it, it all just kind of felt like it was meant to be; you know, there's some wins that you get or races that go well that you just feel like are meant to be, and that was what today felt like.”
Kyle Larson is currently leading the NASCAR Cup Series points table for the regular season championship. He has 749 points in 22 races so far this season.
