The NASCAR All-Star weekend kicked off at North Wilkesboro Speedway on Friday (May 17) with practice and qualifying session. However, due to inclement weather, the All-Star Open qualifying session was cancelled.
Joe Gibbs Racing driver Ty Gibbs will start the Sunday’s All-Star Open from the pole position after inclement weather forced the cancellation of a nearly completed qualifying session.
Nineteen of the 20 drivers had completed both of their allotted qualifying laps when the rain fell and forced NASCAR to cancel the session. As a result, the results of the All-Star Open reverted to the rule book (driver points), which puts Gibbs on the pole and Alex Bowman on the outside of the front row.
Meanwhile, Bowman is followed by Chase Briscoe, Bubba Wallace, and Noah Gragson in the top five. Austin Cindric, Josh Berry, Todd Gilliland, John Hunter Nemechek, and Carson Hocevar completed the top-10.
The All-Star Open Race will be contested over 100 laps on a 0.625-mile short oval track. Motorsport journalist Bob Pockrass tweeted the starting line-up for Sunday’s All-Star Open.
Before the rain, Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Dillon was close to winning the pole for All-Star Open on the speed charts. He will now start back in the 15th in the 20-car field.
Seventeen of the 20 drivers are already locked in for the All-Star Race, and the remaining three spots will be determined through the results of the All-Star Open. The top two finishers from the All-Star Open, and the fan vote winner will advance to Sunday night’s exhibition event.
