The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series heads to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400, and excitement is high as Cup Series is returning to the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway Oval.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is in Speedway, Indiana. The 2.5-mile-long rectangular-shaped oval track features 9.2 degrees of banking in turns and zero degrees of banking in straightaway.
It hosted its first NASCAR race in 1994, where Jeff Gordon emerged victorious driving the #24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.
Since the inaugural race, some of the biggest stars and teams have had at least one victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A total of 15 different NASCAR drivers have taken the checkered flag in 36 Cup races in Indianapolis.
With five victories, NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon is the most successful driver at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Cup Series history. Gordon took his first checkered flag on this track in 1994, while his last win came in 2014.
Among active Cup drivers, seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson holds the lead with four victories at IMS. While Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski are the next two closest active drivers with two wins and on win, respectively.
Hendrick Motorsports’ 10 Cup wins at IMS are the most among all teams. They came in 1994, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2014, and 2017. Meanwhile, Joe Gibbs Racing has won five times.
Five different manufacturers have won at this track, and Chevrolet has won the most times (19). They are followed by Ford (seven), Toyota (two), Dodge (one), and Pontiac (one).
