The 2024 Grant Park 165 concluded on Sunday, July 7. The 20th race of the season started at 4:30 pm ET and lasted for two hours, 19 minutes, and 24 seconds at the Chicago Street Course, with 40 entries.
Due to heavy rainfall throughout the afternoon and a rain delay of nearly two hours, the second edition of the Chicago Cup race was shortened to 58 laps by darkness, and NASCAR had set 8:20 pm ET local time to end the event.
The 2024 Grant Park 165 saw nine lead changes among six drivers and five caution flags.
Who won the NASCAR race today?
Alex Bowman, driving the #48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, secured his first win of the 2024 season at Chicago and locked his spot in the 16-driver playoff field for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.
Bowman stayed out on wet weather tires when many of the race leaders opted to pit to put slicks before the start of the final stage. After a several-lap battle, the #48 driver grabbed the lead from veteran road racer Joey Hand on lap 51, just before a fifth caution of the day.
When the race resumed, Alex Bowman got a big jump on the restart and held off a hard-charging Tyler Reddick in the closing laps to take the checkered flag. The 31-year-old crossed the finish line 2.863 seconds ahead of Reddick to end his 80-race winless streak dating back to Las Vegas’ spring race in 2022. The win marked the eighth of his Cup career.
Meanwhile, Reddick finished runner-up, followed by Ty Gibbs, Joey Hand, and Michael McDowell in the top five. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Todd Gilliland, William Byron, Kyle Busch, and Ryan Blaney completed the top 10 in the Grant Park 165.
Shane van Gisbergen, the defending champion of the event, was involved in Lap 25 caution after contact with Chase Briscoe and came home 40th.
