Navy Midshipmen History
The Navy Midshipmen football program, rooted in a rich history dating back to 1879, has undergone significant transformations and triumphs. Initially established through dual efforts in 1879, the team played under evolving rules that resembled soccer and rugby. The 1910 squad achieved an unparalleled feat, remaining undefeated and unscored upon. In 1926, Navy secured its lone national championship in a three-way tie with Stanford and Alabama. Over the years, notable coaches like Frank Berrien, Eddie Erdelatz, and Paul Johnson contributed to the team's legacy. Johnson, with his innovative triple option flexbone offense, achieved remarkable success and dominated the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy competition.
Ken Niumatalolo, the most winning coach in Navy's history, continued the team's success from 2008 to 2022. Under his leadership, Navy joined the American Athletic Conference in 2015 and clinched numerous bowl victories, including the 2009 Texas Bowl and the 2015 Military Bowl. Niumatalolo's tenure witnessed consistent triumphs over rivals like Army and Notre Dame. In 2023, Brian Newberry took the helm as head coach, building on the legacy of a program that embodies resilience, tradition, and a commitment to excellence.
Navy Midshipmen Coach
Brian Newberry, the current head coach since 2023, brings his expertise and leadership to the Navy Midshipmen football program. Navy Midshipmen Rivals
Navy's football legacy is not just about victories on the field but is woven with the fervor of enduring rivalries that have defined their seasons. The annual Army–Navy Game, steeped in tradition and broadcast nationally, serves as the pinnacle of their college football calendar, symbolizing inter-service pride. Additionally, the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, contested among Army, Navy, and Air Force, reflects Navy's dominance from 2003 to 2009. These rivalries, whether against Notre Dame, Maryland, Rutgers, SMU, or Pittsburgh, contribute to Navy's rich football tapestry, each matchup etching its own chapter in the storied history of Naval Academy football.
Army–Navy Game:
This annual clash against the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is steeped in tradition, marking the culmination of the college football regular season. The rivalry, dating back decades, garners national attention and is televised by CBS. The players, driven more by passion than NFL aspirations, compete for inter-service bragging rights.
Commander-in-Chief's Trophy (Air Force):
The triangular series involving the Army, Navy, and Air Force awards the coveted trophy to the season's winner. Navy held sway from 2003 to 2009, showcasing their football prowess.
Navy–Notre Dame:
The series, uninterrupted since 1927, sees the Navy facing Notre Dame annually. Notable for its continuity, Notre Dame reciprocates for Navy's support during World War II.
Crab Bowl Classic (Maryland):
Navy's intrastate rivalry with Maryland, known as the Crab Bowl Classic, has seen sporadic matchups since 1905. The winner receives the Crab Bowl Trophy.
Navy–Rutgers:
Stemming from both schools' Ivy League origins, this rivalry dates back to 1891. Though their meetings have been intermittent, the close contests and occasional controversies mark this enduring matchup.
Navy–SMU:
The Gansz Trophy is at stake in this rivalry with Southern Methodist University, reflecting the Navy's 11–7 series lead.

Navy Midshipmen Record and Stats
Championship Conferences
Navy Midshipmen's illustrious football history includes a shared national championship in 1926, a testament to their excellence on the field. The 1926 team, under Coach Bill Ingram, achieved a remarkable 9–0–1 record and clinched the title in a memorable season that saw victories over formidable opponents like Michigan. The Midshipmen's dominance was underscored by a thrilling 21–21 tie against Army at Soldier Field, securing a share of the national championship in a historic clash witnessed by over 110,000 spectators.
Division Championships
In recent years, Navy has showcased its prowess in conference play, notably in the AAC West. The 2015 season marked their co-championship in the division, with a tiebreaker denying them the top spot. Despite a setback in the 2016 Temple game, Navy rebounded, earning another co-championship in 2019, falling short in the tiebreaker against Memphis. These achievements highlight Navy's consistent competitiveness in conference play.
Conference Championship Game Appearances
While Navy's Division Championship appearances are commendable, their journey through Conference Championship Games has been equally compelling. Notable appearances include the 2015 and 2019 seasons, where they contested for the title in the AAC. Although falling short in both instances, Navy's presence in these crucial matchups attests to their standing as formidable contenders on the conference stage.
