As a youth, Jacob Trouba competed in the 2007 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Detroit Compuware minor ice hockey team and later joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League (USHL). Notably, Trouba's talent and dedication earned him a first-round selection by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. After completing his junior hockey career, Trouba enrolled at the University of Michigan for the 2012–13 season. During his time with the Wolverines, he earned accolades such as First Team All-American and Central Collegiate Hockey Association's Best Offensive Defenseman. Trouba's exceptional performance led him to announce his departure from the university to pursue his professional career with the Winnipeg Jets. Trouba debuted in the NHL during the Jets' 2013-14 season opener, scoring a goal and an assist. Despite a neck injury early in his career, he finished his rookie season with 10 goals and 29 points, leading all rookies in ice time and finishing sixth in Calder Trophy voting.

However, after spending six years of his career with the Jets, he was traded to the New York Rangers in exchange for Neal Pionk and Winnipeg's first round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Presently, he serves as the 28th captain in Rangers' history and has garnered numerous awards and honors throughout his career. These accolades include being named to the All-CCHA Rookie Team, All-CCHA First Team, and receiving the All-CCHA Best Offensive Defenseman award during the 2012-2013 season. Additionally, Trouba was honored as an AHCA West First-Team All-American in the same year.
